This first album by Amazing Blondel (then comprised of the duo John Gladwin and Tery Wincott) is a bit schizophrenic. Half of the songs are in the faux-Elizabethan balladry style that they masetered on their second album, Evensong), the other half is a hodge podge of styles (a little blues, a little C&W, a little novelty). The variety of styles doesn't make for a cohesive album, but there are individual delights. Saxon Lady is sitar accented trippy folk - quite catchy (I presume this was the single, a shame it never caught on). Season of the Year, Love Sonnet and Minstrel's Song could have easily fit on the Evensong album. Shepherd's Song became a live favorite sing-along. Bethel Town Mission and Bastard Love are decent tunes with somewhat daff lyrics. It's an interesting listen, and the sound on this re-issue is remarkably clear for a recording from 1970. The album cover may be my all time favorite. So, this album hints at where this group would go with their next album, although there is little here that suggests that they would be capable of such an astounding piece of music that is their third album Fantasia Lindum. 3 and 1/2 stars.
