ARSENAL OUT OF TIME
Good old Ace Sci-Fi that I read many years before as a teen--a fun read, but rather dated. Some interesting ideas that, at the time were fairly original, and still offers a quick 'beer-and-pretzels' read that details the growth of an introspective, rather obscure archaeologist into a competent and confident individual through the assistance of his CIA-like handler, and a bossy young lady he meets early on in the novel. This is definitely not a PC story, but considering the date of authorship, this is neither terribly surprising, nor particularly obtrusive either.
In short, the protagonist is ripped from his isolated study of a long-vanished civilization in his office in Antarctica, and thrown into a journey to find a recently-discovered archeological site in the Colonies who have no love for Earth or any desire for him to find this cache of ancient weaponry.
One rather amusing aspect of the story is that the civilization he has been researching is referred to as the 'XXX'--this was written prior to the MPEG ratings and lends a certain humor to this story when read now. Worth the read, but buy it used.

Great SF read, August 1, 2006
I read this book the first time when I was 12 and LOVED it. Over the years I re-read it many times but ended up losing my copy. I have just ordered one to replace it and can't wait for it to get here!!
If you are looking for a great classic SF book, this is the one to read!

An incredibly cheesy 60's SF story, January 13, 2011
The characters were wooden, the plot thin, the sociology questionable. But you know what? I don't care! I read this for the first time 20 yrs ago, and just re-read it last week. It is entertaining, and I never expected more...
