5.0 out of 5 stars THE LESSON
This book is one of the most frightening adult sci-fi horror tales I've ever read!
It shows how racial prejudice could cause us to destroy mankind!
I wouldn't recommend this for children...unless you want the kids to have bad nightmares!
Anyway I rate this as a real page turner, but a wee bit to gory for the kiddies.
Great read!

1.0 out of 5 stars couldn't get through it!
I have read over 80 books on my kindle in the past year. 95% of which I really enjoyed. I really tried with this book. I struggled with the "details to the point of boring" in the beginning, hoping it would get better. When the pilot finally landed on the planet, I thought o.k. here we go. The main problem for me was the dialog. It just did not ring true. I could...

I could not accept the characters as real and so I could not invest in the story.

Oh well, what do I know. It was on the N.Y. bestsellers list.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't do it..., November 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: THE LESSON (Kindle Edition)
This has to be the worst purchase I've made from Amazon. The story is implausible, but if you can get beyond that, the characters are not fleshed out in a way you can relate to, the gore is beyond nightmarish, the author is pushing his belief in reincarnation and eastern mysticism in a very indulgent way, and the language is foul. The main character does not react in a believable way to what's going on around him, and personally, I think it's a sick mind that came up with this garbage. Don't waste your money, people. You WILL be disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Juvenile Fiction, August 2, 2009
This review is from: The Lesson (Paperback)
This has been a tough book to read but I feel compelled to finish (as I do any book I start). The character is obnoxious and chatty. The story is juvenile in scope. I expected better after reading the reviews. Granted, it is challenging to write a book and then have it published, for that I give praise but would I recommend this book to a friend? No.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a very good story., January 6, 2009

Although Mr. Rutledge presents a very noble attempt at developing a wonderful story the main character is not a very believable or likeable human being. The character is supposed to be either an agnostic or an atheist and yet almost every word that comes out of his mouth is, "Jesus", "Oh Christ", or any phrase that has some religious connotation to it. Its just not believeable that someone would speak this way (even if they did believe in a god).
Secondly, this character lands on another planet and addresses the inhabitants as ,"Hey Chief". Its simply offensive. I know we are supposed to feel some empathy, sympathy, or some kind of connection to this character but it is extremely difficult do to the writing. I give it an E for effort but you take your chances if you purchase this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE LESSON by Fred Rutledge, June 17, 2008
This review is from: The Lesson (Paperback)
This is one scary book! Adults only! Not for kids!
It kept me up way late at night!
The story shows how we could all kill off our planet with racial prejudice!
I would not recommend this for Children. There's way too much Adult violence, curse words, (some sex), etc. for the wee ones!
Other than that, I'd rate this as an extreemly great & scary read!
