Book Description

"THE POISON OF THORNS: The Dragon's Back #1," by Robert Dennis Wilson, unfolds as an intriguing and action-packed Christian Fantasy with bards, dragons, swords, and mysterious black-robed villains lurking in the shadows.

Ten long years after the mysterious murder of their parents, two brothers have just been freed from incarceration in a prison-like orphanage. Against their wills they are torn apart and launched into separate quests against conflicting and dangerous forces. Independently they struggle to learn the truth and to resolve the unanswered cries for vengeance that have long consumed their lives with the poisoned thorns of unresolved bitterness. Finding themselves pitted against a strange and hostile world, overwhelmed with many questions; it becomes their individual obsessions to find the hidden answers and rescue each other.

Why were they locked away in that out-of-the way orphanage for ten long years, when they had living kin who would gladly have claimed them? Who are the sinister black-robed "Dragonmen" and what is their hidden agenda. And why are these blackrobes so interested in the two teenaged brothers that they would mobilize all of their considerable resources to possess them?

What is the significance of the shape of their isolated continent? Is it true that it appears to be a gigantic Dragon floating above the endless depths? What about the rumors that man-sized, almost invisible dragons are stalking their nights?

And finally, who are the mysterious followers of the mythical Gryphon? Why do they alone, of all the diverse peoples of Dragonsback, have the ability to swim in the dark bottomless waters that surround their land? And most importantly, who and where is that mysterious Swimmer; the man they both witnessed taking part in the drowning deaths of their parents? Is he still available... for retribution?

4.0 out of 5 stars Figurative Fantasy September 13, 2011
Format:Paperback
Book 1 of The Dragon's Back Series reads somewhat like a Lewis, Tolkien or even a Rowling. Full of heraldry and lore in a make believe otherworld, this novel is full of action and adventure sure to please anyone who enjoys a good fantasy story. I felt it's main appeal would be for a YA market, but anyone who likes fantasy with an unapologetic Christian worldview should enjoy it.

It's actually a story within a story, as author R.D. Wilson starts the book with a grandfather telling his troubled grandson a story in hopes of teaching him a lesson about self esteem. In the end, he gets a whole lot more.

Two orphaned boys are rescued by their long lost grandsire. One's destiny is to become a singer while the other, still bitter about his parent's death and his grandfather's seeming neglect, must learn his lessons the hard way. In the end they choose different paths, highlighting the age old struggle between good and evil.

Wilson's figurative style of writing fits in well with this particular story, since the plot and characters are themselves, analogies for life, love and faith. The `Swimmers', who follow the Gryphon, are at odds with the Dragonmen - evil personified. It's an inspiring and beautifully descriptive story.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting and adventerous journey July 27, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Robert D. Wilson is a story teller from the time when story tellers knew how to keep you enthralled and on your toes. From Page one you will find yourself in different world with different values, and yet it is the same as our world today with a few twists. The story is about two brothers finding their way; one with good and one who gets trapped by evil. The journey they make, that encompasses books one & two, is thrilling, exciting, suspenseful. and sometimes comical. You will find it all in Mr. Wilson's books; including a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. This would be a terrific book for young people looking to find their way. It will definitely show you the difference between good and evil. I liked that Mr. Wilson put Christian values all through the book in such a way that they are simple and easy to understand.

Mr. Wilson's descriptions are alive and vivid, putting you right in the scene leaving nothing for you question. I could feel the texture of walls and see the rooms and places around, smell the ocean, and feel the salt water closing around me as I ran into it with Jason and Kaleb.

I highly recommend both of Mr. Wilson's books to anyone looking for a good, clean, adventurous story. I am eagerly awaiting the third in the series, "Shoshanna's Song." But as I know it may be a while before I get it, I will probably need to gladly reread the first two. These books a definite do-overs anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poison of Thorns - a captivating read June 5, 2012
By patr
Format:Paperback
After the first few pages The Poison of Thorns by Robert Wilson had me so captivated I couldn't put it down. The author had a way of describing people that made me feel like I had met them personally and each scene so I felt I was standing there seeing it for myself. Poison of Thorns is an intriguing story. Two brothers are rescued by their grandfather from the prison they had lived in since the death of their parents. The grandfather lovingly attempts to provide direction and a futures for the boys resulting in polar opposite paths for the brothers. What follows is a well written allegory of classic good vs. evil with Biblical principles interwoven. The storyline is rich with symbolism. Illustrations on the consequences of harboring resentment and unforgiveness (thorns) are interwoven throughout. I definitely recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-Written Good v Evil High Adventure May 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Poison of Thorns, The Dragon's Back #1, is Christian-themed Fantasy high adventure, which uses the framed-story, or story-within-a-story technique, specifically a grandfather (Pop Pop) metaphorically explaining self-esteem to his grandson.

Robert Dennis Wilson has created a fantasy world, which is dominated by heraldry and tradition, where two brothers go on a quest to save the world from heresy. The author has cleverly folded in an elaborate back-story and a dominating culture of established protocol, which is easy for the reader to keep straight thanks to sufficient appendices of a Glossary, a List of Characters, a list of Guild Vestures & Markings, a Dictionary of Swordsign.

Without including any plot spoilers here, this is a classic good (Swimmers) verses evil (Dragonmen) conflict. There are choices to be made by the brothers and consequences to follow.

This high adventure is not so different from the metaphoric writings of Tolkien or even Lewis. Readers who enjoy Christian-themed fantasy adventures will be enamored with The Poison of Thorns, which has laid the foundation for a continuing series of like entertainment. This is one you should read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Epic and Allegorical January 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Like a modern day Tolkein, Robert Dennis Wilson builds a world that fantasy lovers will be loathe to leave. This epic journey starts out a little slow, and so many characters are introduced in the start that it's hard to sort - but the payoff in the end is invaluable. Worth picking up for any lover of Christain Allegorical Fantasy.

Enjoyed the book. Show's man's struggle with evil, and the pervasiveness of evil. Also demonstrates the difficulty of "giving up" the familiar.
