Editorial Reviews

Review

"I spent the entire book alternately nodding my head in agreement, occasionally shaking it in shared shame, and covering my mouth to keep something between a chuckle and a belly laugh from coming out while riding in a car with coworkers. There are so many little truths that apply to everyone, not just Fat Girls and before even finishing the book, my Skinny Girl friends were already looking to get their own."

"It's like Gregg Alison Suchow got in my head and wrote all my thoughts."

"Hilarious! Quick read, so there is no reason not to give this a whirl."

From the Author

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing my book, THE F WORD: Tales of a Fat Girl. I am indeed a Fat Girl who has thoughts, ideas and perhaps the same perspective as living inside a larger body as you! This book is supposed to make you chuckle as well as giving you a little food for thought, chocolate cake perhaps?

Don't over think it, just enjoy it! :)

This quick read is so funny and insightful. The author is honest about herself without making anyone feel bad about themselves. And you don't have to be a FG (Fat Girl) to relate to a lot of it. It is a book for all women. While reading it on the train to work I found myself laughing out loud and reading bits and pieces to friends. This is a great book to read on vacation or on your commute to work but it will make you feel good where ever you are.

I spent the entire book alternately nodding my head in agreement, occasionally shaking it in shared shame, and covering my mouth to keep something between a chuckle and a belly laugh from coming out while riding in a car with coworkers. There are so many little truths that apply to everyone, not just Fat Girls and before even finishing the book, my Skinny Girl friends were already looking to get their own.

Gregg's sense of humor is dry, self-deprecating in places, and honest to a fault. The things she wrote are so often things I think to myself or say to friends, which is maybe why this book appealed to me so much. I enjoyed her topics and was happy to see that she didn't shy away from some topics. I also appreciated more than I can explain that the book wasn't just some round-about way of saying "poor fat me", which is so common with fat girl books.

The formatting for the book is a little odd... as if there were page breaks inserted at specific places in the original format of the book. On the third page of each chapter (of which there are 43, at about a 5 minute read per chapter), there's a page break, typically at about the middle of the page. There were a few typos but not enough to make the book difficult to read.

In the end, I loved it. I found myself reflected in so many of the pages. The book is an affirmation that it's okay to be just a simple Fat Girl (as long as you're still really good in bed).

You can find her blog here if you'd like to try her humor on for size before buying the book (but you should still buy the book!): [...].

This book is quite humourous and I found it to be an endearing and brutally honest look at friendships, love and relationships through the eyes of someone who believes they're 'fat' and all the conotations that come with being 'fat'. For anyone who has ever been overweight, believed themselves to be so, or has a friend who on the larger side of life, this is a good read. The author also comes across as being assertive and confident which is not a typical 'fat' person stereotype and has the ability to successfully poke fun at herself without it sounding like a sob story 'feel sorry for me' type book. Whilst I could relate to some parts myself, it was also good to get someone else's insight into their own 'fat' world. An enjoyable read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am not a "Fat Girl". I love to eat, have been in love, heart-broken, felt out of place and felt "in place". As a 40+ something year old, I had a great childhood, but it wasn't perfect (what's considered perfect anyway) and all adults have some "issues" with spouses, parents, children and friends. Anyone reading this book that doesn't have the "perfect" life can appreciate the Authors experiences, candor, honesty and humor. If you didn't enjoy this book or weren't able to find any humor in it then you must be perfect or have never watched one episode of Sex in the City. This book is a quick, easy read based on the Authors life experiences. Kudos to her for having the nerve to put her secrets, feelings, experiences and opinions in writing.

This book is amazing! It's not very often you pick up a book and feel as if you know the author. I can relate to many authors, their story lines, etc., but this is different. Gregg Suchow is so real. It's as if she is sitting at a bar with a friend telling a story, not writing a book. It doesn't get better than this. And her honesty is so refreshing! What an accomplishment! We all know it's not easy being honest, especially with one's self. Thanks Gregg - for saying out loud what we all have felt at one time or another in our lives. And thanks for helping us see the humor (not the horror) in it all. I want more!! I'm on the look out for her next book. Hopefully there will be one!

Gregg Suchow is a funny, funny woman. She shares her stories, her experiences, her opinions, and her heart openly with her readers. Does she make tragic spelling errors? You bet! Did I notice? You know it! Did it change how I felt about her musings? Not in the least. As I read her stories I remembered my own. I was struck by the evolutionary track it seems we shared - from self-hate to self-tolerance, from caring about what you think of me to caring about what I think of me (and what I think of you). I journeyed with her from story to story. Gregg spins a good yarn. And I would recommend to anyone who has ever been or who has ever known an FG.

Where to start? No offense to all the reviewers that gave this gem all 5 stars but really? Seriously?? I hate to be cynical but I have to wonder how many of the 5 star reviews are friends of the author? Or even friends of friends? I bought this book after reading the sample chapter and had a couple of chuckles. You know those movies you can't wait to see because the preview makes it seem like it's a riot....and then after you see the movie you realize the preview showed all the best parts? That's what I ended up with.
I agree with the reviewer that said the book is sad. Funny? Sometimes. Cute? Maybe after a couple of drinks. Sad...absolutely. It isn't really a book at all but a collection of self-indulgent, self-deprecating, rambling musings on being sexy and fleshy. I was not offended by the language or any of the adult content and I know this wasn't supposed to be a motivational book on accepting your own fatness. I didn't buy the book expecting to end up with a new outlook on my body. There is no other way of putting it - this is just bad, bad, bad. Seriously missed major typos (we wear high-heels, not high-heals) and I had the feeling I was listenining to an old friend that talks way too much that I had not seen in a long time - for a reason. The book is too short to read over a period of days and too annoying to read in a couple of hours. Skip it. I wish I had.
