3.0 out of 5 stars Intriquing Promise, disappointing reality, March 28, 2010

I purchased the N0204 as a RAID1 NAS. I have been very satisfied with my Buffalo NAS (many years old, the only prolbem I every had was that fan failed several years ago, Buffalo was very helpful in describing how to fix it). It was time for a RAID1 box, and this box looked quite intriquing.

Installation is very frustrating. There is only one way to install this machine and if it doesn't work, you are dead. Instructions are very poor, and provide no help if things are not going well- on the other hand, if things are going well why would you even read the instructions?

Finally did get the install wizard to "see" the machine. BTW- I am using dynamic IP addressing, without trouble, although the install was so rocky that I wondered if a static IP address would have been better.

Unlike the Buffalo NAS, the proceedure to change the machine name is obscure. I could not get the included back-up utility to install. The browser based management application is their way or the highway- a number of directories established, apparently no way to delete or rename.

All in all, a good idea, very poor user interface.

Setup instructions were very poor.... to the point of non-existent. Requires a fixed IP address ti install the device but this is not indicated. Very frustrating indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Runs fine for me, January 18, 2011

I'm an engineer, so I'm used to a lack of documentation, but I've been running this little guy on my desk to hold my email and technical documents for almost a year now without issue. I had no trouble with the setup and initially ran with DHCP but have since switched to a static IP so I can run shortcuts to certain folders. The updates, although infrequent, have added a new interface. I have had no issues with the 3 updates I've appled. I have yet to see another solution with as many options for the same price. Best suited for personal use for someone with some technical experience.
