Product Description

Slip into the world of Garrett, the greatest thief the world has never seen. Thief The Complete Collection contains all three of the genre-defining stealth adventures, including the ultra-rare Gold edition of the first Thief game.  Thief I: The Dark project is a first-person 3D action/adventure game that puts you in the role of a master thief relying on stealth and cunning.  Utilizing the revolutionary new Dark Engine, the game will transport you into a dark and immersive tech-fantasy world of stealth, intrigue, deception and combat.  Thief II: The Metal Age has you on the streets and rooftops of a darkened city, where the forces of a corrupt sheriff looms.  It will take someone with a soft touch and even softer step to stay ahead of the law. Thief: Deadly Shadows is the ultimate stealth experience - stealing from the wealthy is all in a night's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Thief Series is my All-Time Favorite September 9, 2009
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
First off, let's talk about what's in the box. There are three games. The first two were created by Looking Glass Studios, and are EXTREMELY well-made games. The third was made by Eidos and was fine, but not as enjoyable as the first two. To those who started with Thief III, you have no idea how "open" the city was in the first games. That said... after Looking Glass folded, at least the third part of the story did get told, albeit in somewhat "consolized" form.

THIEF came to me, originally, in my sound card's bundle. I didn't think I'd care for it, but it was free, so I tried it, and fell in love with the game. It's not about stealing... not exactly. Yes, your way of making a living is a bit disreputable, but hey, you end up saving the world... so I guess that can be forgiven!

The original game was called "Thief - The Dark Project." This "collection" box actually holds "Thief Gold" which is a subtly reworked version of that game (with several new levels, new creatures, and so forth... stuff that was supposed to be in there but got cut for time in the original release). The other two games are the original releases, albeit fully patched. There is a small problem with these game and later operating systems, where the video codec (INDEO) becomes unregistered from time to time. This is an easy fix, of course, and I believe that they have installed the (fan-derived) fix into this package. (This is a slightly odd circumstance where Microsoft originally carried Intel's INDEO codec, but dropped it after some sort of conflict with someone at Intel, and not only removed it but seemingly caused it to malfunction on occasion if you install it yourself!)

There are some issues with video cards... particularly nVidia cards running recent drivers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Serious Compatibility Issues February 9, 2010
Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Even though it claims to be XP and Vista compatible, this is not really true. None of the movies work (which drive the plot). After some searching online, I found a few suggestions to fix it, but it never seemed to work for me. Also, Thief does NOT work with dual or quad processors, except with some adjustment of settings. The solution involves setting "affinities" with the Thief program in the Task Manager, but you have to do it every time you play the game or it will crash.

This is a real shame. The Thief series is absolutely wonderful. It combines terrific gameplay with a great plot, and a wonderful atmosphere. Unfortunately, if you have a reasonably new computer, you can't really enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars COMPLETE Thief collection December 30, 2009
By D. Leer

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
There are two THIEF COLLECTIONS on the market. Unfortunately the box has the same name and description for both.
One has Thief The Dark Project, Thief The Metal Age, Thief Deadly Shadows.
The other has Thief GOLD, Thief The Metal Age, Thief Deadly Shadows.

All versions in both collections are patched to the latest update.

If you buy, buy the COMPLETE COLLECTION with THIEF GOLD. If you get the one with The Dark Project and not GOLD exchange it for the collection with GOLD.

TDP and GOLD are basically the same game, but GOLD has three additional missions, and is the game of choice.

If you are a SHOOTER enthusiast and want simple, quick gratification, this is not the game for you. This game (TGOLD/TMA) requires patience, thought, and the development of discipline. You don't get the BFG because you kill the bad guy, you don't collect large accumulations of loot. You must spend all loot accumulated from any mission at the beginning of the next mission.

This is not a game you play to "Beat". If you play that way you will "Beat" yourself. Thief is replayable to the nth degree. The enthusiasts have written over 500 Fan Based Missions to add to the game set.

You need to learn to use the limited tools you have, the patience to WAIT, LISTEN, WATCH, and SEE WHAT YOU LOOK AT in order to complete the missions successfully.

TDS is much simplified from the play of TGOLD/TMA, and is basically dumbed down for porting to Consoles. Many of the tools and abilities inherent in the series have been removed, changed, or severely curtailled.

It is well worth having to get and play TGOLD and TMA. If you never use Deadly Shadows, you won't miss a thing.

2.0 out of 5 stars I feel cheated April 17, 2010

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I owned and played all three Thief games in their original forms and liked them so much I bought this so I could play them again (since the first two won't install under Vista). They were, at least the first two, among the best games ever made --hands down.

This is not a criticism of the games, but of this bundle. I paid for a second copy of three games I already have expecting they'd work fine under Vista. Well, they don't. Aside from nuisances like having to set processor affinity (documented in the readme but, apparently, not worth fixing) every time I launch the game to losing cut scenes completely (which I didn't see in the description anywhere), I feel ripped off. I paid again to get less than I got the first time.

I wish, instead, I'd spent my money on an old computer that could run an old copy of Windows that could run the full versions of the games instead of these cut-down duct-taped versions.
