3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, June 28, 2002
The provocative title got my attention and the author tries hard to be controversial but this book reads like a Jackie Collins or Judith Krantz imitation. Take away the race angle and all you have left is a spicy, shallow little trifle. I enjoyed it but I'll forget it in two weeks. This is a beach book.

3.0 out of 5 stars a hollow center, August 9, 2002

There's so much to like about this smart book: the so-real-you-feel-you're-there settings, the snappy pacing, the colorful supporting cast. So it's a shame that ultimately the book left me feeling left down. The problem, I think, is the character of the narrator, Julia--quite simply, she doesn't seem to have much of one. She's a cipher around which the more complex and intriguing characters circle. Now, if her alcoholic brother, Corky, had been the narrator, that might have been a more moving and memorable tale.
