Mat's book is a fantastic insight into the wonderful and wild experience that a safari in Africa can offer. His stories are together funny and witty, exhilarating and scary, heartbreaking and personal. He captures the rawness of each experience so candidly. Mat's honest and compassionate nature shines warmly in his writing.
Thank you Mat, this was such a special read. I hope to be back again on the truck one day soon!
While I am past the desire to camp in places where one has to check if there is a lion nearby before venturing to use the latrines, I know that, if I ever were to find myself in a dangerous situation, I would want Mat to be my guide! His passion for the land and its animals, his love of nature, and his enthusiasm about sharing his experiences are contagious. One feels like he is there, actually "seeing" with the eyes of the imagination the elephant or the rhino charging, or the snake hissing nearby, and "hearing" the cacophony created by different languages and cultures, as he travels through very diverse African countries.
In the end, what comes through most strongly is Mat's passion and excitement for everything beautiful in nature that our planet, and Africa in particular, can still offer us.
This is a fun read for anyone who has been on safari in Africa, or anyone curious about what goes on behind the scenes in the life of a safari guide. Mat Dry recounts anecdotes, some humorous, some that give pause, of his life as an American working as a guide in South Africa. His love and respect of The Bush and his passion of introducing clients to the wonders of African wildlife makes the reader wish every guide were as conscientious as the author. I like how he lets the reader in on his dealings with the people he encounters. From a client who is having a horrific reaction to his malaria drugs, to a man named Yusuf who rents a hamburger so that Mat will give him some money on Zanzibar, Dry takes the reader along with him as he wrestles with the challenges each situation presents and the unique methods he must use to resolve them because, as he says, "this is Africa."
This book will also intrigue anyone who is thinking of a career as a guide in Africa. If this is your dream, Mat shows you how you can do it, even if you weren't born in Africa.
