About the Author

Mat Dry obtained his safari-guiding credentials from the Field Guide's Association of Southern Africa in 2007. He worked on Amakhala Game Reserve in South Africa for six months and then decided that he wanted to see more of Africa. In 2008, he joined one of Africa's premiere overlanding companies, Africa Travel Company. For nearly four years he worked with ATC as a guide in both East and Southern Africa until deciding to create his own company, TIA Safaris. Mat now divides his time between educating people about Africa in the States, and taking clients on the trips of their lives into the Africa he knows and loves. You can contact Mat through TIASafaris.com or its phone number, 1-602-561-7823.

I joined one of Mat's safari groups in May 2010, and i can say without a seconds doubt those 4 weeks was THE MOST unforgettable adventure of a lifetime. Reading Mat's book felt like i was right back there in Africa all over again, his extraordinary passion travels straight through here in his storytelling. I have never met someone so incredibly passionate and fearless and amazed by the wildness of nature. This is a guy excited by everything, he can even make species of grass seem compelling to learn about! Now that is something!

Mat's book is a fantastic insight of the wonderful, wild and wacky experiences that a safari in Africa can offer. His stories are together funny and witty and exhilarating and scary and heartbreaking and moving and personal - all in one. Mat's honest and compassionate nature shines warmly in his writing, reading this book felt like I was right back there in Africa all over again; sitting by the camp listening to his crazy tales, thinking this guy is nuts.. but 'AWESOME' all in the same captivated moment.

'This is Africa' is a truly inspiring collection of safari experiences by a person who is out there living his dream every day. Africa is such a unique and special place, if you haven't been yet, you will be absolutely compelled to get there after reading this book.

Thank you Mat, this was such a special read! I LOVED IT. And i hope to be back again on the truck one day soon!

'This is Africa' is written by a Safari guide whose breath of knowledge re:flora & fauna of the African bushveld belies the years he has lived and worked in Southern Africa. The book struck a chord with me as my own soul moves in sync with the roar and trumpet of Africa's wild.

The smooth flowing quick prose punctuated with the sights, sounds, smells and near-death moments of the writer takes the reader to the heart of the African savanna, to live the experiences and to stand in awe of its brutal beauty.

Timely humour provides the anti climax of deadly moments such as, 'I gotta change my shorts' after an adrenaline charged moment with a spitting cobra; or after a death defying bus ride, 'I will need a vacation from Earth for a couple of months'. And of course there's the hilarious, if not tragic, episode with psychotic clients!

For the uninitiated Mat Dry provides enough intelligence about the physiques, behaviours, charms and unpredictability of African bushveld that by the time the reader completes the book, he is a pundit on what is arguably the best of Africa.

The imagery is vivid as you feel the chilling horror of impending death as in, 'With every powerful breath it expels, blood froths from its lips.'

And, finally, the writers communion with George, the elephant, is the most enviable experience that the writer shares with his readers!

'This is Africa' is a must read for all those who dream of Africa, for all those who ever doubt the need for conservation and for all those who need confirmation of our communion with nature and its wild!

Congratulations, Mat! I loved it!

Format: Paperback
This is a wonderfully written book that combines a lot of information about African people and fauna mixed with entertaining vignettes of being a safari guide with all kinds of anticipated and unanticipated experiences.
While I am past the desire to camp in places where one has to check if there is a lion nearby before venturing to use the latrines, I know that, if I ever were to find myself in a dangerous situation, I would want Mat to be my guide! His passion for the land and its animals, his love of nature, and his enthusiasm about sharing his experiences are contagious. One feels like he is there, actually "seeing" with the eyes of the imagination the elephant or the rhino charging, or the snake hissing nearby, and "hearing" the cacophony created by different languages and cultures, as he travels through very diverse African countries.
In the end, what comes through most strongly is Mat's passion and excitement for everything beautiful in nature that our planet, and Africa in particular, can still offer us.

This is Africa, True Tales of a Safari Guide.

This is a fun read for anyone who has been on safari in Africa, or anyone curious about what goes on behind the scenes in the life of a safari guide. Mat Dry recounts anecdotes, some humorous, some that give pause, of his life as an American working as a guide in South Africa. His love and respect of The Bush and his passion of introducing clients to the wonders of African wildlife makes the reader wish every guide were as conscientious as the author. I like how he lets the reader in on his dealings with the people he encounters. From a client who is having a horrific reaction to his malaria drugs, to a man named Yusuf who rents a hamburger so that Mat will give him some money on Zanzibar, Dry takes the reader along with him as he wrestles with the challenges each situation presents and the unique methods he must use to resolve them because, as he says, "this is Africa."

This book will also intrigue anyone who is thinking of a career as a guide in Africa. If this is your dream, Mat shows you how you can do it, even if you weren't born in Africa.
