Product Description

Size: 60 | Product Packaging: Standard Packaging

Thorne Research D-5000, 60 Vegetarian Capsules It is essential to maintain healthy vitamin D levels throughout all stages of life, from fetal development to old age. Vitamin D helps protect a number of important functions in the body. The current recommended daily vitamin D intake of 400 IUs is based on the minimum allowance to protect against bone disease. However, an upward revision of the FDA's guideline is now under consideration in light of new research, especially pertaining to immune function. Cutting-edge research suggests serum vitamin D levels should be in the range of 32-80 ng/mL 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). Although direct sunlight exposure is a good source of vitamin D, many people do not get enough sun due to season change, latitude, or lifestyle. Therefore, vitamin D supplementation can be of great benefit in these cases. Individuals deficient in vitamin D may need 5,000-10,000 IU of vitamin D daily to replenish tissue stores. With these individuals specifically in mind, Thorne's D-5,000 supplies 5,000 IU of pure vitamin D3 in each vegetarian capsule.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of ten leading Vitamin D3 supplements: Nutrigold Vitamin D3 Gold, Doctor's Best Vitamin D3 5000iu, Now Foods Vitamin D3, Life Extension Vitamin D3, Nature Made Vitamin D3 5000 I.U., Nature's Bounty Vitamin D3, Thorne Research D-5,000, Schiff Mega D3, and Nordic Naturals Vitamin D3.

The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones. It is used, alone or in combination with calcium, to increase bone mineral density and decrease fractures. Recently, research also suggests that vitamin D may provide protection from osteoporosis, hypertension (high blood pressure), cancer, and several autoimmune diseases.

Sun exposure is an easy, reliable way for most people to get vitamin D. Exposure of the hands, face, arms, and legs to sunlight two to three times a week for about one-fourth of the time it would take to develop a mild sunburn will cause the skin to produce enough vitamin D. The necessary exposure time varies with age, skin type, season, time of day, etc.

People who don't get enough sun, especially people living in Canada and the northern half of the US, are especially at risk. Vitamin D deficiency also occurs even in sunny climates, possibly because people are staying indoors more, covering up when outside, or using sunscreens consistently these days to reduce skin cancer risk.

Older people are also at risk for vitamin D deficiency.

The only Vitamin D I can take with NO side effects (jittery, headaches, palpitations). My Vit D level was 26. My doctor put me on a prescribed high dose (50,000 IU) once a week for three months. Level went up to 46 and I felt great (well being, mood improvement, join pains disappear). However, after I stopped taking the high dose, my doctor recommended 2,000 IU per day. I bought 4 different brands in health food store, best quality I could find/perceive, but started having jittery results, palpitations, etc. It turns out that after having been on high dose for three months, then my levels plummeted and started major symptoms (withdrawals?) with feelings of depression, bone pain, and, the worse symptom, unable to sleep due to major palpitations. After ER visits, cardiac monitors (all in a great effort to address the symptoms and not the root cause), a different doctor suggested Vit D 5000 IU by Thorne daily. After three days of taking them, I started to feel like I had not felt for years. No side effects, in fact, these pills provided a very calming effect vs the jittery effects from the other ones. Regarding cost: Thorne is priced similarly to health food store brands, and they work. Also, if you are a woman in the early 50s, and you are not feeling yourself, have your Vitamin D levels checked. If low, take these vs all the other major drugs some doctors are so quick to prescribe. You'll feel a million times better without taking drugs that eventually will provide other/new side effects. Great product, highly recommend it. Shipping was excellent. I got it next day.

For those of you who don't really know about vitamins, Thorne Research is one of the best companies to purchase from. They are more expensive, but their products are pure and they use quality ingredients (including the construction of their delivery system capsule). It is a lot to explain, but this is a great vitamin. Worth every penny. (No, I do not work for Thorne).

I started taking this 3 years ago per doctor's recommendation for this high dosage due to Fibromyalgia.
It's white powder, dry form in in very petite capsules, much smaller than other over-the-counter supplement capsules. An example os size using common television advertisements, is to see the common capsule size for Prilosec and Nexium. If those capsules were to be called 'horse pills,' then these D3 capsules are midget Shetland ponies. Very easy to swallow. Being in dry form, not oil form, I have no stomach upset. If you have problems with your body absorbing nutrients from oils, whether from food or vitamin supplements, then this product is really worth your trying.

My doctor and several drs in his very large medical organization researched together to find the best producer to recommend to their Fibromyalgia patiends. I was told they almost unanimousely agreed on the Thorne brand because it is the "purest" Vitamin D3 they found. If you notice, you can buy them here with No Preservatives.

An unexpected benefit: My bone density 3 yrs ago was borderline osteoporosis, despite my young age. I get little good exercise due ot disability. However, my last bone density test actually showed my bones a very little thicker, and higher than the borderline. I was later told that Vitamin D3 particularly is very important to actually GROWING bones, whereas medicines and other supplements focus on preventing further deterioration. If that is true, it worked for me. However, I was cautioned that D3 alone does not "do the trick." You must also have calcium and magnesium closer to a 1:1 ratio instead of the traditional 2:1 ratio.
