Book Description

This is an epic novel based on the life story of 14 year-old boy from the Sudan named Yousif Gumaa who, along with other children from his compound, was kidnapped with no assurance of ever being rescued. Living one of our worst nightmares, he was sold as a slave to a family in Libya. After two and half years of living in captivity, he escaped his captors and trekked hundreds of miles through the Saharan desert and spent several days on a decrepit boat crossing the Mediterranean Sea to finally make it to the shores of Europe. After several months in Europe, he migrated to the United States of America only to find a life full of challenges, heartache, promise and love. Through his terrifying ordeal, you will be right there with him, moment by moment, day by day unable to turn the pages fast enough to quiet your heart. This book is moving, suspenseful, and unexpectedly funny.

I learned about that area from the book. We get a certain amount of general knowledge from the newspapers but this brought the reader right into the daily lives.

More About the Author

Alex Iheaka, the author of THORNS OF A THIEF, was born in Denver Colorado, the first male and second born of five children. At an early age he moved to Africa with his parents where he lived for several years. Eventually he returned to the United States of America and continued his school career which included attending college at Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado where he pursued a degree in Healthcare Management. He settled in the beautiful state and made it his home. He worked at one of the local hospitals in Denver and performed various tasks which included catering towards the indigent, homeless, unemployed and the poor. He also volunteers feeding the homeless in various shelters.
"The most rewarding feeling in my life is the satisfaction I get from knowing I made a difference in a person's life," he says.
With his ambition to help bring more awareness to social inequality, racism, genocide and human trafficking that takes place across the globe, he decided to start writing novels.
One day, he pulled out his laptop and began to write down those stories of victims of genocide. It was there that a career was born. Having spent his life surrounded by the homeless and human trafficking and genocide victims has given Mr. Iheaka a fairly good view of what they go through in life. Alex is a member of several writers groups
