I recommend this book to everyone who starts fulminating about the government that they demonize, liberal and conservative alike. This book shows how the right wing politics of resentment shaped the fears of white men into the 50-year rule of Republicans that LBJ predicted when he signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Richard Viguerie invented the direct mail strategy whereby the single-issue voter issues, like abortion, could be counted on to turn out just enough votes to win elections for conservatives. I would like to point out that abortion, whether you're for it or against it, is not a political issue. Thus did Viguerie and the right wing kidnap the national political discourse onto talking points from which the right wing does not deviate. Only one thing wrong: these single-issue hot button issues are not politics. They are strategies to get resentful white men up out of the Barcalounger and into the voting booth. All of the rest of us are held captive in this strategy -- our own fault.

Terry Dolan, as Crawford goes on to explain, invented the political action committee which severed campaign finance from oversight meant to limit the contributions of special interests to political campaigns. Though he was a closeted gay man who died of AIDS back in 1986, Dolan can be said to be the father of the Citizens United decision by the Supreme Court, in which the New Right SCOTUS majority scuttled campaign finance laws to allow single donors to give unlimited amounts of cash to candidates. Sally Quinn, Washington's most sensitive observer of the herd, has noted that Citizens' United has changed Washington's entire vibe. Quinn announced the end of power in DC in a Washington Post magazine article for which she was widely vilified.
