Book Description

October 11, 2011
Join TIME for a grand tour of civilization's most important landmarks. Here is a "bucket list" for the intellectually curious, a lavishly illustrated survey of the places where history was forged-where influential battles were fought, where empires rose and fell, where religions were founded and artistic renaissances flourished. This book is for readers fascinated by history and art, culture and society, politics and religion. We'll tour Moscow's Kremlin and Beijing's Forbidden City. We'll trace the caravans along the Silk Road, gaze at the stars with Babylonian magi, dispute ethics at the Acropolis. Here are the 100 "must see" places for any well-traveled earthling. How many have you seen?

The number 100 is terribly limiting. Well over half of the "Great Places of History" are in Europe while other continents are given short shrift. Why is Tikal included but not Tenochtitlán (in Mexico City) or nearby Teotihuacan? Why the Battle of Gettysburg but not the Battle of Yorktown (or Tours or Vienna or Adrianople, for that matter)? Why Burning Man but not Woodstock? The arbitrary nature of the selections are both inevitable and frustrating. The photography, however, is indisputably beautiful, and the essays about the significance of each location on the list are well written albeit too brief.

Since a reference work that focuses on historical sites could run to many volumes, and since Time-Life is the go-to publisher for mile-wide, inch-deep surveys of knowledge, this book is useful enough for the historical and geographical novice. It may whet the appetite for further research, and it's particularly good for children and teens and for families that want a picture book of places to consider for holidays both local and global. Those searching for a much more comprehensive reference, however, should check out the 960-page UNESCO book "1001 Historic Sites You Must See Before You Die."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Places of History February 10, 2012

It is a great book for all, but particularly for children say, 8 years and upwards. I bought it for my grand son, he is almost 12 years old.

I am pretty ancient now but it brought back memories of books I was given as a boy. Books that fire the imagination, that create a yearning to see the world, for adventure, to learn more of the diversity of the world, that show that whatever our immediate environs may be, there are other magical places to be explored and then, when you have done a little of that, you realise just how small the world is and how alike we all are. A good lesson for us all.

Certainly covers the world's main scenic attractions. But background info is written at fifth-grade level, not particularly informative or insightful.
