Released on Paul McCartney's 70th birthday, this is a nicely produced tribute to the man, put together by James Kaplan. The book is 112 pages long, glossy and with lots of photo's (as you would expect). It begins with an introduction, continues with Bob Spitz's 'Top 40' Macca songs - I didn't agree with it, I doubt you will either, but with such a huge catalogue to choose from it is always going to be difficult. Most artists have a few hits, which would certainly make a top 10, but this is someone whose work spans nearly six decades and there is quite a choice. Other articles look at the historic meeting between John and Paul at the Woolton fete (if this interests you, you might enjoy The Day John Met Paul: An Hour-By-Hour Account of How the Beatles Began) and further chapters which include a potted history of the Beatles and his solo career.

Overall, this is a nicely put together book, although it is certainly a tribute rather than a biography and merely glosses over his life story. The photographs are nice - I had seen most of them, but there are a handful I haven't seen before, which make it worthwhile. As you would imagine, there is much focus on Paul's relationship with John and also with Linda and there are some interesting comments from members of his family and those he has worked with. There are also interviews and tributes from other musicians, for example from Billy Joel about Paul appearing with him at the last Shea Stadium show The Last Play at Shea). It is not a must have book, but there is enough to make this an enjoyable addition to my library.

McCartney's life could be spliced up into so many times and segments. And remarkably, each of them is precedent setting and amazing! This book gives you a front row seat to each of those phases. It's hard to believe that one man could create so much and endure so long... and all the while have the energy and passion he did since the beginning. McCartney is a machine that refuses to slow down. He lives and breathes music...all music, and serves as an inspiration for anyone who thinks life is too short or time has run out. Paul proves that with courage and determination, one can continue to 'Rock On'. The great thing about this book is that when it ends, you realizes it doesn't. The legend continues... - Vince Benedetto

With this book I learned things I didn't already know and saw pictures I hadn't seen before. Did I mention I am old enough to have the Sullivan shows in 1964? You would think I had seen it all but leave it to Time and Paul to come up with new slants and photos! I recommend this wholeheartedly!

This is a great souvenir of Paul's 70th birthday. Great photos and history of the Beatles. If you're a big Beatle fan, this is a "must-have" for your collection.

If you've been living in a cave for the last 60 years, Paul McCartney is an English singer-composer who has been labelled "the most successful musician on earth." If you are, in fact, that cave-dweller, James Kaplan's PAUL MCCARTNEY, THE LEGEND ROCKS ON book will provide a comprehensive summary of McCartney's life and career thus far.

After a brief introductory chapter, Kaplan journeys back to that fateful July 1957 meeting where Paul met John and history was made. He then takes the reader on a guided tour down Paul's 'Long and Winding Road' during which the Beatles conquer the world, Paul finds Linda and goes solo, Paul loses his groove before conquering the air-waves once again, Paul marries Heather/Paul divorces Heather, Paul becomes a musical mega-success and finds happiness - we genuinely hope(!) - with Nancy, is knighted, etc.

The McCartney story has been told in much greater detail several times before but Kaplan's book, a 2012 TIME Books release, benefits from its currency, a crisp yet affectionate narrative and a nice batch of pix. Recommended.

Although this is a nicely put together product, I was not thrilled that Time decide to go over the same old Beatle story. We all know that they were the greatest group of all time but I think that it does a disservice to Paul Mccartney's solo catalog which is amazing in it's own right. Wish they had done a bit more waxing about the rtist that he is and continues to be rather than the one from 30 years ago!

This is basically a rehash of everything you have ever heard before and some things I would not put much stock in (For example, we know what Heather said caused auguments between her and Paul but did Paul ever confirm that? Were he and George REALLY at odds over the music during the Anthology? No more than usual I would think but the author uses this to add poignancy to George's death, like it is not poignant enough on its own merit.). Also and this is a sore spot to some but there is a lot of Lennon in there such about how his music post Beatles related to Paul's etc...it was never insulting to Paul but was it necessary? If I wanted a rehash of Lennon post Beatles there are several other books I could buy. The interaction within the Bealtes and maybe right after the breakup, sure, but let's look at Paul solo without continually comparing them. The photos are good tho--some that I as a 48 year collector had not seen. Get it on sale!
