Format: Hardcover
In February 1964, four mop-topped, cheeky, talented English musicians landed in New York City, scheduled for a two-week tour and appearances on the Ed Sullivan TV show. In short order, The Beatles captured the hearts and minds of many young Americans, therein starting a revolution that would change music and society worldwide. America - and the world - was never the same after February 7, 1964. Bob Spitz and Time Books combine talents to offer up this slick but comprehensive account of those two momentous weeks in February when John, Paul, George and Ringo came, saw and conquered.

Spitz, who has penned several Beatles books, does a commendable job of capturing the sequence of events as the excited but nervous Beatles land in NYC, are overawed by the airport fan reception, meet and conquer the previously-cynical American press, tour the city, rehearse and then perform on Sullivan's show, etc. Their Sullivan performance on February 9th drew 73 million viewers and Beatlemania took hold. Yet, as Spitz points out, for all the joy, excitement and fun, there was a troubling aspect to the growing fan reaction. Hysteria grew daily, which resulted in the Beatles becoming virtual prisoners in their hotel. Likewise, at their concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Washington Coliseum, the fan reaction was so loud that often no one could hear the music. Fortunately, JPG&R had a respite from the madness when they journeyed to Florida for the second Sullivan show and stayed at a private home.

Beautifully captures the height of Beatle mania.
A highlight of the book for me is where the book describes their meeting with Elvis Presley - it's worth it for that piece alone.
