What struck me on receiving this book is how small it is! It is a badly needed "Essential User's Guide" for Americans who, in my experience, stand in awe of a Constitution that they know very little about. I might call this "Constitution 101," ideally suited for a high school class in government. The Constitution presentation and explanations are brief and clear. The accompanying essays are timely, discussing such matters as health care, with an attempt to present "both sides," and thus be non partisan (in a country now being torn apart by partisanship...). The book inspires me to want to know more. It is a good start.

I'm an attorney at law and, frankly, this wonderful book gave me greater insight into the United States Constitution than I received in law school.

This was a very informative and entertaining way of understanding and embracing the ideals of our founding fathers. It's truly "the essential user's guide" to the modern interpetation of this great document.

Much like wearing the American flag pins on their lapels after 9/11, a little copy of the Constitution is waved around by some politicians on the campaign trail in an effort to be thought of as more patriotic than the other guy or gal. They talk about how they always have a copy of the Constitution with them and occasionally read it for inspiration. Yeah. Okay. I'd bet my left nut that most if not all of those more-patriotic-than-thou charlatans have not read it or, if they did, have no real understanding what they read. This is because the Constitution is not riveting reading by a long shot. How lawyers can read oodles of this legalese and not eventually decide, one day, to take a swan dive out their law firm's tenth-floor window is beyond me.

Fortunately, TIME has come to the rescue. Their user's guide breaks down the Constitution into small sections and clearly as well as briefly explains the Founding Fathers' intentions. During the creation of the historical political document, there was much heated debate and angry accusations thrown about by the different representatives trying to protect their state's interests. Compromises were made. The most glaring example being the need to avoid the issue of slavery if they wanted the thing ratified. The Introduction written by Sandra Day O'Connor added some legitimacy to the book, but I found the piece to be unnecessary. The next article written by Richard Stengel, pretty much echoes Ms. O'Connor; essentially saying, "Geez whiz, our Constitution sure is cool." I thought it was a waste of time. However, the remaining three short pieces before the Constitution dissection were helpful. They transported me back to that fateful summer.

If your education about the U.S. Constitution consisted of memorizing the preamble, you'll get a lot out of this book. It's well-written and well-organized. The introduction is really interesting, too -- and that's rare!

Understanding our U.S. Constitution can be a little difficult if you are not exactly into politics and government. This book has made understanding the Constitution easier. I would recommend this book to any student taking a Government class.
