speed bag newbies should avoid this set,
By feedthecat (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Speedbag Swivel Set (Misc.)
Please excuse me if the title of this review sounds patronizing, but the fact of the matter is that, although one would ASSUME that this TKO set is made for beginners becuz it is inexpensive, becuz the speed bag is quite large (believe this one is the 10" by 7" model, which is actually closer to 11" by 8" in size), and becuz the swivel is of a very simple design, the latter two attributes actually make this set MORE difficult for beginners to use: compared to a medium-sized bag (for most brands they are 9" by 6"), this one is pretty heavy and doesn't rebound well and, therefore, has to be hit quite hard in order for it to bounce properly off the "drum"/strikeboard, and the PURPOSE of working the speed bag is to improve one's speed, timing, rhythm, hand-eye co-ordination, and, to a lesser extent, get one into the habit of keeping one's hands up, NOT to increase punching power (that's what the heavy bag is for - besides, one hits the speed bag with the SIDE of the hand); and keeping the bag going straight ahead is somewhat difficult using this type of "ball & socket"/"ball & hook" swivel in that it is designed to go in ANY & ALL directions (which is why many of those acrobatic speed bag-hitting "experts"/exhibitionists on youtube, etc use a ball & hook swivel) and is, therefore, somewhat unforgiving to inexperienced, inaccurate striking, bag enthusiasts. For the above reasons, I strongly suggest that those below the, shall we say, "intermediate" level should INSTEAD buy a "standard", tear-drop-shaped speed bag of medium size AND a "single joint" swivel that spins at its base/top and has a U-shaped bag "clip" at the bottom (secured with a cotter pin), as this type of swivel will tend to keep the speed bag going in the same direction even if one hits it a bit off-centre. Aside from the above concerns, and notwithstanding the bag's unusual "pear-shape", the bag itself is pretty good in that the "shell" takes a lot of punishment before it wears down &/or the seams finally tear, and the bladder, while eventually starting to leak air as all speed bags bladders eventually tend to do, leaks much slower than other brand bags - at least in my experience (was given three of these bags over the years and still use one now and then - I have two speed bag platforms of different heights and use this bag on the higher set up). As for the swivel, well, if one DOES use it from the get-go, it'll be a snap to use the other types, should one decide to make the switch later (in addition to the problem cited above, the "ball" of this swivel also has a tendency to move up and down inside the "socket" when the bag is not hit "squarely" and, if one always hits the bag back and forth in the same direction, the "lip" of the socket will develop grooves in the front and the back). Incidentally, if you are a newcomer to boxing-style workouts AND are on a budget, I recommend considering the double end bag over the speed bag becuz a set (bag, cords, anchor plates/screws) for the former is much less expensive than the "platform", swivel, and bag are for the latter (to view several other good reasons, click on "See all my reviews" and refer to my review for the TOP CONTENDER LEATHER DOUBLE END BAG). UPDATE Should have mentioned this the first time around: if you're using a speed bag platform that has a thin strikeboard (less than 1") and HASN"T had a piece of plywood or other type of wooden board glued to it in order to improve stability &/or that hasn't been stablized by placing a bag of sand, etc on top of it or by connecting the top of it to a ceiling joist, this TKO model or any other kind of large bag will prove problematic in that it will cause the strikeboard to vibrate when the bag hits it, which will adversely effect how well the bag rebounds and swings. In short, if you have a "flimsy" setup, use a smaller, lighter speed bag than this one.

The speed bag I purchased was very worthwhile. It is easy to assemble and install. The bag can be mounted almost anywhere and is even if you are a beginner like me it is easy to use and provides a great work out and training tool.
