Biography

TLC were one of the biggest-selling female R&B groups of all time, riding a blend of pop, hip-hop, and urban soul to superstardom during the '90s. Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas managed to appeal equally to pop and R&B audiences, blending catchy hooks and bouncy funk with a sassy, sexy attitude. The crazy-sexy-cool members of TLC didn't do much to advance the wholesome reputation of girl groups, but the 90s wouldn't have been the 90s without them. If the words "divas need not apply" made it onto recruitment materials when the act formed in Atlanta in 1991, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes never noticed: her scrapes with the law and repeated threats to quit the trio caused constant public squabbles. Still, when T-Boz, Chilli, and Left Eye managed to make it into the studio, some seriously satisfying hip-hoppy pop materialized; the drama never stopped the world from diggin' on them.
