4.0 out of 5 stars TM is excellent but too expensive
This book is good and TM is the most effective meditation technique out there, but if you want to learn TM you have to spend $2500! Fortunately a few independent teachers, such as Raymond Harrison or the TM Independent UK group, are teaching TM for a reasonable price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rehash
This book was nothing new only a rehash of previous books on TM.

The author was lacking in "Technique". The title suggested he was going to give you the how to to TM; however, he obliquely suggest signing up for the TM sessions at about $1,500.00.

This book was nothing but a sale's pitch to sign up for the TM course.

2.0 out of 5 stars Moving beyond TM, January 7, 2007
This review is from: The TM Technique (Paperback)
TM is a wonderful technique. In today's world I find it unacceptable that this universial and very simple meditation technique would cost upwards of $2,000. I would direct people to other organizations such as The Art of Living which offer very affordable classes in breathing, yoga, and a meditation course that is a similar technique as TM but with a slightly different, more heart-focused approach. It is mantra based and has the same structure, at a fraction of the cost. Its founder, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, was recently nominated for a Nobel prize. An interesting note is that Ravi Shankar was previously part of the TM movement years ago but broke off and has gained unprecendented world-wide acceptance.

I was very interested in learning TM but as a graduate student, however, it was out of my reach. I simply don't buy that you need to break the bank to learn meditation. I paid a very small amount and practice Sahaj Samadhi (Art of Living's technique that is similar to TM) joyfully and dilligently every day, twice a day.

If you are uncomfortable with the costs associated with this technique, look elsewhere. The Art of Living is a great place to start.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good message but no technique here, you'll need more than a few bucks., July 4, 2009
This review is from: The TM Technique (Paperback)
I gave this 2 stars because the essence of the message of TM is a good one, and the technique (although not included in this book) I believe is a good one for some. It didn't agree with me but I meditate in a very similar way where I watch my thoughts for a while and then let the technique go. It loses three stars because the whole TM movement do themselves a great disservice by charging so much for courses.

May I recommend checking out True Meditation by Adyashanti. You get a book and cd with guided meditations and he explains what meditation is in it's purest form. His message rings so true for me. It's essentially the same message that TM teach at a fraction of the cost. Basically, begin with a technique then eventually let it go and with a bit of practice you can reach unconditioned consciousness within a few minutes of meditation with very little effort. Listen to the guided ones first then try on your own. Go for it, you'll feel so much better for it.

I was very interested in transcendental meditation after reading David Lynch's book, "Catching the Big Fish." After calling my local TM center, and after a few emails, it comes down to paying $2,500!!! There are plenty of free meditation classes, which I am going to take instead of paying this shameful sum. Also, "Meditation for Dummies" is a great book to compliment any beginner.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does not teach the TM Technique!!!, February 1, 2010
By
This review is from: The TM Technique (Paperback)
For the past few months i have been doing meditation daily. Since then i have been reading up on different forms of it. I ordered this book in order to learn about the TM technique, but it fails to teach it. In the chapter about the technique all it said was what the technique does, then at the end of the chapter, it says, the tm technique can only be tought by a practitioner and cannot be written down, therefore enroll in a tm program asap and buy a mantra, whoopie! THIS WHOLE TM ORGANIZATION IS A SCAM! if it were truly what Maharishi wanted, it probably would not be so, but all this book really is just an advertisement, a long brochure on why one should study tm. I would not recommend reading it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sales pitch for overpriced TM sessions, July 27, 2011
This review is from: The TM Technique (Paperback)
This book is a complete SCAM,SCAM,SCAM !!
Don't waste your time buying this book if you want to learn any TM techniques. This book rambles on the power of the universe, the mind, and how Maharishi Yogi was a poor spiritual man that left India to save the word through meditation techniques. There is more Blah Blah Blah and in every chapter they explain how Transcendental Meditation® -- notice that is trade mark-- can save all the problems of the world and yours, BUT only if you pay a modest fee of 2,500 per session. The truth is he established a for-profit business called The Maharishi Group that invests from real estate to supper markets and they only care about money, not spirituality like the whole book preached.

5.0 out of 5 stars Any thing less than the best is a waste of time, August 24, 2005
This review is from: The TM Technique (Paperback)
This is an investment for Life and an investment in Life. It relates to your total happiness, and securing the ground of your Being (see "Science of Being, Art of Living;MMY). If you are serious about finding lifes ancient Golden core, this book is a good, scientific, and reality based place to begin and end your search. There is no better technique than the method described in this book, and this reading is a great way to begin your interface to a deeper view of Reality. The other reviewer said to save money and buy a copy cat. I say save the money even if it takes a couple of years and get the real thing. I've been under the TM influence since 1971 and it gets better every year. Ask anyone on a rip off technique how long they've kept it up.

You could call this the perfect idiot's guide into transcendental meditation. The way Peter Russell breaks it down and uses simple language to describe the topic makes it easy for most anybody to understand. Mostly taking the scientific and mental aspect of the entire topic, it doesn't seem like it should bother even the most non spiritual person... because it isn't a spiritual technique which most people mistake it for. If you have heard of TM but don't have much information, and are thinking of pursueing it, this is a great book that will cover a great deal of what TM is, some of it's history, and what it can do for you.
