Product Description

The Time Machines GPS Network Time Server is a simple to use GPS based time server that will supply accurate time for all computers and time keeping devices on the network. By placing a time server on the local network, (S)NTP time packets are provided without requiring systems to go to the Internet to get a Stratum 1 time synchronization. The system uses an active GPS antenna to maintain the current time as broadcast by United States GPS satellites. With this device installed on your local network, there is no longer the worry that if the Internet connection goes down, time synchronization is lost across the network. The unit is small and can be placed anywhere within the network layout. The built in high sensitivity GPS receiver is able to lock multiple satellites from within many buildings or from a window location, removing the requirement that outdoor antenna be installed. Setup and use of this time server is straightforward. Simply connect both the included power supply and the GPS antenna to the base unit and then connect the base unit to the local network. Go to a computer on the network and browse to the device at its default address to enter the software setup within the control box. Set parameters to match your network and the system will start to send out time packets to any device on the system that asks for an update from it. When paired with our digital Power Over Ethernet (PoE) clocks, synchronized time is assured no matter the state of your network, or the state of the internet time server the clocks are pointed to. Accuracy is also improved because the network delay of the internet is highly variable, while the local LAN connection is likely sub-millisecond delay. TimeMachine GPS based time servers are suited to any application where coordination of events at multiple locations is required. Used by Education, industrial facilities, military installations, public safety command rooms, government, broadcasting, and hospitals.

As everyone else has stated, this unit is great. It's in a class by itself in terms of price. Small and medium sized businesses NEED reliable NTP, but have a really tough time justifying the 5 figure starting prices of most professional NTP systems. These units afford you semi-reliable stratum 1 time that is not affected by flaky internet time servers or latency. Why 4 stars instead of 5? 2 reasons:

1. I have three of these, and I cannot get them to stop bouncing their ethernet interfaces once every few minutes. Hard-coding 100/full seems to be the most stable, but even then I lose them for about 5 seconds once every 2 or 3 minutes. I have tried these on Cisco 2248TPe FEXes, 3750Xs, 6500s (multiple modules) and 3500s. No change. Even with this incredible annoying behavior, I still consider this a 4-star device. Just don't rely on ONE, buy a few and point your stratum 2 servers at all three of them. At least 2 will be available at any one time.

2. It is *extremely important* to realize that these are time SOURCES, not TIME SERVERS. They cannot handle being queried by more than a few devices at a time. They need to feed other time servers, not clients directly. Their CPUs are very limited, and refreshing their management web interface 4 or 5 times in a row is all that's required to reboot them. As a result we protect ours with ACLs that only allow access from management networks and the Stratum 2 devices they feed.

Keep these limitations in mind and you can save yourself tens of thousands on hardware and support/licensing.

This device was easy to set up. I ran the sensor through the hole in the wall and attached it to metal flashing on the outside and it worked like a charm. The sensor is magnetic and weather proof. I Was unable to get a signal inside my building (strip mall with cinder block) so I would not count on it working with out the sensor outside, but it was easy to pass the cable through the hole for my security camera wire. I have no real criticism, just a suggestion, on the setup page you could display the time signals. It clearly says you are locked and displaying these has no real function, but it would be cool to look at and it is a time server. Keep up the good work and thanks.

What can I say, it just works.

The processor is a bit slow, and if you need super accuracy ( >10ms ) then this isn't the unit for you, but for most applications.... it's great.

As another reviewer noted, very easy to use. The folks who designed it thought it through. A decade ago, I managed a few computers for a small non-profit group and had some computer clocks 6-8 hours off. Back then not so easy to fix. Today, with Win XP, Vista or 7, Windows has an Internet Time option. Which is great if you are connected to the Internet when the update is scheduled. If not, no update. The TM1000A performs the same function, on a local basis. No Internet needed. Simple to set up. Place the antenna near a window, and the base unit near your computer. Plug in power. The local network connection can have several forms, depending on your particular configuration. (the manual, download from css-timemachines.com has far more info) The easiest is just a crossover cable (Amazon has several) between the computer and the TM1000A. Point your browser to 192.168.1.15 to connect, make any needed changes and you are ready to go. If your Internet is via USB modem (cable or DSL) you are done. Then, right click on the time in the lower right corner of the diplay, click on "Adjust Date/Time" select the Internet Time tab. In the Server field, enter 192.168.1.15 (if you didn't change it) and Update Now. In a few seconds, you should see a success message. Without any external connection.

The unit will not work with Streets and Trips, there are other programs that will display satellite data, and can help with antenna placement. The 1000A can output the GPS 1 pulse per second for calibrating lab equipment. It has a wall power module, uses about 5 watts, so will cost about 10 cents a week to run, depending on your power company. It takes about 2 minutes to get initial "lock" on the satellites.

For only $300 you get a statum 1 time server. The closest you will get is around $3,000 to do the same thing that this one does. BUY IT!

I ordered this time server when our Primex wireless clock system went belly up the second time in a year. After setting up a an ethernet network for the POE clocks in our facility I needed some type of a time server. I installed this timemachines time server and after a few minutes of fiddleing with the IP address I had my clocks working perfectly with the correct time. This unit is excellent value for the price. Not being an IT person I could use better IP addressing instructions. Our ethernet network for clocks and enviromental systems is separate from our computer network. POE clocks are the way to go and ethernet makes a stable easy to use and inexpensive network. With a time server no internet connection is necessary.

works with Windows Servers, Red Hat, PCs and Cisco network equipment. Get the Time Machines Precision Digital POE Clock to go with it so you can see the time and know it is working fine, rather than check all the logs.

if you can set up a wireless router (via web interface) you can set this up.

antenna needs view of the sattelite, and can take 15 minutes to lock on, but since you will never move it, not an issue
