TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours
Sixth Edition
The TNM system is the most widely used means for classifying the extent of cancer spread. TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours, Sixth Edition provides the new, internationally agreed-upon standards to describe and categorize cancer stages and progression. Published in affiliation with the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), this pocket guide contains important new and updated organ-specific classifications that oncologists and other professionals who treat patients with cancer must use (starting with cases diagnosed and treated in 2003) to adequately classify tumours for prognosis and treatment. Revised standards include:
* Major alterations in the classifications concerning carcinomas of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas, pleural mesothelioma, bone tumours, malignant melanoma of the skin, ophthalmic tumours, and the regional lymph node classification of breast carcinoma
* A nasal cavity tumour classification
* Changes in classification of head and neck tumours
* Risk factors for gestational trophoblastic tumours have been modified according to FIGO recommendations
* New subcategories in gastric, prostate, and kidney tumour classifications and in the stage grouping of colorectal carcinoma
* Schemes for recording the assessment of sentinel lymph nodes and isolated tumour cells
* The definition of the y symbol for cases classified during or after initial multimodality therapy has been further clarified
These changes will enhance the value of TNM in treatment planning and as a prognostic indicator.

"...contains the International Union Against Cancer rules for classification and staging...major modifications and additions...reflect new data on prognosis and new methods for assessing prognosis..." (SciTech Book News, Vol. 26, No. 2, June 2002)

"...a thorough update of a well known, widely used manual...supersedes the previous edition and is a must-have for all clinical institutions..." (Doody’s Review, January 27, 2003)

2.0 out of 5 stars This is 6th Edition -- Now Superseded by 7th Edition, October 18, 2010
This review is from: TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours (UICC) (Paperback)
I'd give it 5 stars except that this 6th Edition is **OLD** and has been superseded by the 7th Edition, which has numerous changes in staging of various malignant tumors (aka cancers), to include adding additional malignancy types. Could be of interest to someone wanting an historical reference for reviewing malignancies that were staged while the 6th Edition was in effect. Otherwise, one should use the 7th Edition and it's approximately (if not exactly) the same cost.

There's currently a link on Amazon's 6th Edition page announcing a newer edition. Use it to get to the 7th Edition.
