5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Clear Guide for Your Exam
This book was an excellent guide in teaching how to master in the exam. When I went to take the exam, I had no surprises at all. Instead, I was ready for any kind of questions, ideas, tricks, and most importantly; very comfortable with the layout of the exam software. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Clear Guide for Your Exam, December 11, 2006
This book was an excellent guide in teaching how to master in the exam. When I went to take the exam, I had no surprises at all. Instead, I was ready for any kind of questions, ideas, tricks, and most importantly; very comfortable with the layout of the exam software. The book's accompanying CD has Complete FULL sample exams with their model answer key (including answers to the Oral Section, as well as the Written Section).

For those who do not have much time to study for their TOEFL exam, please do not worry. In less than 10 days, I was able to finish the whole book with reading periods of 3 to 4 hours per day. The book has very simple to understand English language; yet it presents a strong structure in their flow of sentences.

Another main advantage of the book is that it is divided to 8 chapters; each chapter introducing various questions in different theme: Technology, History, Nature...etc. Studying the first four chapters allows you to be more than ready for the exam as they introduce all the question types. The latter four chapters repeat the same question types but in different themes - which really broadens your knowledge to different words that you may expect on the exam.

I still did not get my TOEFL score yet, but I am more than certain that if it would be disappointing, it would be for some reason other than this book. You will not regret buying this book.

First of all, the reviewers who gave 5 stars for this book are obviously employed by Kaplan. Just read their reviews. They are not foreign students whose second language is English. Disregard their comments.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: This book is NOT organized like the TOEFL iBT exam. I would expect a good exam guide to have separate chapters covering each section of the actual exam. Instead, everything is all mixed up together in this book. There are eight chapters in this book, each covers a different theme: science, history, education, etc. Huh!?! This book will NOT prepare you to answer the actual TOEFL questions. I think this book was written before the TOEFL iBT was first released. Therefore the authors did not have the exam structure to prepare a useful exam guide. Shame on Kaplan.

The Official Guide to the TOEFL iBT by ETS is not perfect, but at least it explains the structure of the exam in detail. Until a better book is released, get the ETS book and do not get Kaplan's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good price / value, April 22, 2006
This review is from: TOEFL iBT with CD-ROM (Kaplan TOEFL IBT (w/CD)) (Paperback)
This is also the only book that I used to prepare for TOEFL. Engish is my second language. I got a score of 110 out of 120 even I messed up one listening session as I had to go to bathroom during the test.

It may make your head spin a bit in the beginning because, in my opinion, firstly, the general introduction might have been well-known to you; secondly, the topics of articles it selected to use in the book is very "American" and you will need some background knowledge of American culture. This actually proves good to me later as IBT tests you whether you can manage your life in an Amercian Universities.

Once I got rid of the beginning, I got familiar with how the questions will be asked in real test, what are the major subjects in TOEFL test of reading, listening, reading and writing. Once i got that, it actually leads me to think about more similar topics and tells me how to train myself on it. When I sat in the test in last November, there was no surprise to me.

In addition, it is very fairly priced for its value. Good luck.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money or time, April 14, 2006
This review is from: TOEFL iBT with CD-ROM (Kaplan TOEFL IBT (w/CD)) (Paperback)
I read all the -ve reviews of this book and still decided to give it a shot. I bought the book and tried real hard to read the first 4 chapters. It is so confusing that after a little while I just couldn't study anymore. The so called "Skimming" technique made my head spin, as I could not get a handle of what the book is trying to teach. In the end I returned this book and got "The offical TOEFL guide" (ETS). I think that's all you need to pass the test. The layout is simple, divided into 4 categories: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. (exactly how the iBT is presented) I think the official guide is worth every penny, so get it instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for short term preparation, January 14, 2006

This review is from: TOEFL iBT with CD-ROM (Kaplan TOEFL IBT (w/CD)) (Paperback)
Decent book with good strategies, study plan and practice tests. Ideal for people who are planning to take exam with just 5-6 weeks of preparation.

I beg to differ from the opinion expressed by other reviewers. Unlike them, I didn't find the book to be very sloppy. Infact this was the first TOEFL material I used and I was able to get the big picture of the TOEFL test by reading this book. I was able to score 108/120 although I did use another book.

Unlike other books, it is a complete material where no additional purchases ( audio CDs etc.) are required. Overall, real value for money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, November 23, 2005

This review is from: TOEFL iBT with CD-ROM (Kaplan TOEFL IBT (w/CD)) (Paperback)
I bought this book with high hopes, but it does not have good exercises for building skills for the TOEFL IBT. There are practice tests on the CD, but the book does not offer helpful support. I would recommend the Longman TOEFL IBT preparation book by Phillips instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book to get a higher score on TOEFL iBT!!, May 18, 2007
This is the one and only book you need to take the TOEFL IBT if you already have an intermediate or advanced English Level. It contains a CD-ROM with 4 complete practice tests (very similar to the real one). It also has the sample answers of the Speaking Practice. I used it two weeks before taking the test for he first time for and I got 115 out of 120. Great Book! Very useful :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Only book needed for TOEFL iBT, February 4, 2006

This review is from: TOEFL iBT with CD-ROM (Kaplan TOEFL IBT (w/CD)) (Paperback)
This was the only book I used for TOEFL. I studied this book for just 3 weeks, and managed a score of 112/120.

It comes with two CDs, one CD has the study material and the other one has 4 practice tests. The way the book is written is excellent. It covers what is tested in TOEFL in one chapter and it repeats it in the rest of the chapters, but with different topics. The diversity of topics definitely helped me to prepare well for the exam.

The practice tests are the icing on the cake. Take all the four exams and it gives you a pretty good picture of what you can expect in the real TOEFL. Also register and take the free TOEFL on ETS website.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely useless, April 7, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: TOEFL iBT with CD-ROM (Kaplan TOEFL IBT (w/CD)) (Paperback)
This book is a complete waste, absolute mess. The strategies given like making notes etc. are far from practical, given the timelimits. The CD ROM exams are tougher than you may get. The CD ROM exam opens in a small window, making it difficult to read. Sample responses are also not that great. Buy Longman's book. I have both and i feel Longmann's much better.
