Book Description

Aladdin Picture Books
Mrs. Toggle and her class prepare for the arrival of a new student whom they expect to be a dinosaur.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- The endearing set of characters first introduced in Mrs. Toggle's Zipper (Four Winds, 1990) appear once again. Teacher Mrs. Toggle, Mr. Abel the custodian, Mr. Paige the librarian, and a class full of ethnically diverse children all prepare for the arrival of a new student, a dinosaur. The children research the habits of dinosaurs, the custodian builds a special desk, and the school cook promises to provide an appropriate lunch as soon as she finds out whether it's a meat-eater or a vegetarian. But Mrs. Toggle is still perplexed as to how she will fit the newcomer into her class until the principal, whose phone call she has misunderstood, shows up with the new pupil, a little girl named Dina Sawyer. Alley's cartoon drawings, reminiscent of Lillian Hoban's illustrations for Miriam Cohen's school stories, are colorful, expressive, and full of action. Children will enjoy the fun of such a mix-up; teachers will pick up on the tongue-in-cheek humor.

From Kirkus Reviews

When the principal tells Mrs. Toggle that her new student will be a dinosaur, she is taken aback but doesn't doubt his word--Mr. Stickler never jokes. Mrs. Toggle and her wide-eyed class start to get ready: they'll need a big desk and another reptile to keep the dinosaur company; the cafeteria should be warned. As the avid class troops from library to kitchen, doing research and making plans, a green diplodocus grows in their imaginations--and in Alley's engaging cartoon-style illustrations, which deftly capture the kids' waxing enthusiasm. Then the new girl arrives: Dina Sawyer. Though the dinosaur fades out of the picture, the children have enjoyed some unusually well-motivated research and considered the meaning of welcome in a unique context. A fine sequel to the equally delightful Mrs. Toggle's Zipper (1990). (Picture book. 4-8) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. 4.0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Toggle and the Dinosaur, November 28, 2000

Mrs. Toggle and the Dinosaur is an exciting and creative children's story, and Robin Pulver is a great author. After Mrs. Toggle receives a call from the principal of the school she works, she announces to the class that they will be joined by a new student. The new student is a dinosaur. Mrs. Toggle was nervous, so her and her students prepare the class and themselves for the new student. When everything is ready, and the new student arrives, Mrs. Toggle and her class were shocked! There was no dinosaur, the new student turned out to be a small girl named Dina Sawyer. Obviously, there was a huge misunderstanding. To me, this book is appropriate for teachers to read when a new student joins their class. Children also get the chance to imagine what it would be like to have a dinosaur in class. I recommend this book to teachers, and parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Toggle and the Dinosaur by Robin Pulver, August 31, 2006

Description from the book back cover:

Mrs. Toggle is in a tizzy. The principal has told her to get ready for a new student. But this is no ordinary student. It's a dinosaur! Mrs. Toggle has never taught a dinosaur before. There's so much to do to make it feel welcome. Mr. Abel, the custodian, must make a desk big enough for it and Mrs. Burns, the cook, needs to know if it's a vegetarian or a meat-eater. How will Mrs. Toggle ever get ready in time? When the new student finally arrives, Mrs. Toggle is in for a big surprise. And she learns to take her own good advice: if you don't understand something the first time you hear it, ask questions.
