Good software for learning the basics.,

This software is good at teaching you the basics of Cantonese and Mandarin. The Talk Now disks will teach you the essential words and phrases in Cantonese and Mandarin. The software will not teach you how to read and write Chinese. The World Talk disks are not for beginners. The World Talk disks are a good review of the subjects on it. They are intermediate level; the topics on the disks such as the weather, directions, ordering in a restaurant, constructing sentences, true or false, the calendar etc. are presented in the assumption that you have done these topics before. To summarize if you are serious about learning Chinese, these disks are not a substitute for a beginner's Chinese language course; but if you take a beginner's Chinese language course you will have a headstart after using these disks. This software is good if you are going to China, Hong Kong or Taiwan because it will teach a few words in Cantonese and Mandarin.
