Product Description

What This Product Does

TP-LINK's SafeStream Wireless N Gigabit Broadband VPN Router TL-ER604W supports wireless N and Gigabit wired speeds on all ports. It integrates multiple VPN protocols, and high-security and high-performance VPN capabilities, making it an ideal choice for branch offices in need of cost-effective secure remote connections to headquarters or remote offices. Furthermore, the router provides many useful features including hardware-based Wi-Fi On/Off button, Guest Network, Application Control, and PPPoE Server, etc.

Key Features

High-Security VPN Capabilities

TL-ER604W supports IPsec, PPTP and L2TP in Client/Server mode while also being able to handle pass-through traffic. The maximum throughput can reach 38Mbps. It also features a built-in hardware-based VPN engine allowing the router to support and manage up to 30 LAN-to-LAN IPsec and 16 PPTP VPN connections. Advanced VPN features include DES/3DES/AES128/AES192/AES256 encryption, MD5/SHA1 authentication, Manual/IKE key management, and Main/Aggressive negotiation modes.

300Mbps Wireless Networking for Convenience & Security

The wireless speed of TL-ER604W can be up to 300Mbps. It also supports multi-SSID and guest network features. With up to 8 SSIDs, the router can provide 8 distinct wireless networks for different departments or user groups. Guest Network offers secure separate wireless Internet for your customers and business partners, without providing access to the internal network and potentially sensitive company information.

Abundant Security Features

For defense against external threats, the TL-ER604W features SPI Firewall function. Additionally, it can automatically detect and block Denial of service (DoS) attacks such as TCP/UDP/ICMP Flooding, Ping of Death and other related threats. Moreover, this router provides IP/MAC/Domain name filtering functions, which forcefully prevent attacks from intruders and viruses. For applications such as FTP, TFTP, H.323 and RTSP which are not well compatible with NAT, TL-ER604W offers administrators an one-click activation of ALG choices corresponding to the forementioned applications.

Safety-Minded Enterprise Investments

Professional lightning protection technology is embeded to prevent electrical surges from penetrating the interior of the electrical equipment. The router can withstand up to 4KV in well-grounded connection conditions. This feature ensures that the router remains as safe as possible.

Has potential but not their yet as a business router.

Pros:
1- PPTP/L2TP and IPsec VPN works like a charm.
2- Cheap compare to Cisco RV220W or ASUS

Cons:

1- After the import of saved config all the DHCP reservations entries will be gone

2- VPN and Admin Passwords do not take special characters such as @! signs, which make the password much weaker and less secure.

3-VPN pool can not be set in the same subnet of the LAN

4- can't specify the range "Any" to open port for any source.

5- Opening ports in this router is simply a hassle and time to time the router just start blocking them for no reason. especially VoIP and UDP traffic.

7- Technical support are not technically knowledgeable about this product at all, and lack basic networking knowledge.

8- No wireless Dual Band.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Update Dec-07-2014: Downgraded to two stars, as the new firmware release cuts the WAN download speed/ and WAN LAN throughput by 66%!

They fixed some NAT issues, but still does handle UDP and VOIP properly ...especially if using a different Bind port for SIP.

Passwords still don't take special characters, I just gave up doing other testings when I saw the bandwidth test results...

Quality control seems to be absent, Waiting this long for firmware release to come up with this, is disappointing!

It's a shame the hardware is good, the software is garbage!

Works great. Can't wait till they release an ac version. Can't beat the price and better than the big name brands that I use to trust.

I purchased this router to connect to a VPN service which support L2TP. Although there are entries on the web interface to connect in that manner, there is no way to enter a required pre-shared key. It looks like it might support an L2TP connection if you have control of both the server and the client, since it has all the required GUI elements, but that is not how any VPN service works. Contacted technical support for resolution, but they don't seem to understand either their product or how a VPN service works.

Gets two stars instead of one because it will work as a non-VPN router and as a PPTP VPN router with a VPN service. If you have no interest in L2TP, this router may meet your needs.

This is a very straight forward entry level business router. It works out of the box and is surprisingly stable when changing LAN settings, DHCP pools, or subnets. Other routers have a tendency to reboot, require a release and renewal of IP, etc., but this is able to do so much faster and without reboots. This makes configuration much more straight forward for network admins who know exactly what they need setup and want to just run through all the settings in order, as needed. Compared to Netgear, Asus, and Cisco routers, TP-Link is more of an OEM developer without all the frills of prosumer equipment so the interface is NICE, simple, plain text, and organized. All the settings are straight forward and well written. I currently have a 2 watt booster attached to one of the wifi antennas to reach our upper building levels with the other one in a standard horizontal radiating pattern for the lower building. 30 total clients, 27 wireless, and a 50Mbps high speed connection, and four days without a hiccup. Easily breezy setup for port forwarding, triggering, and uPnP. The solid metal construction is a huge plus but one complaint - why didn't TP-link make this thing wall mountable? Why why why? It doesn't even have a rack mount option; kind of ridiculous for something for business use. In any case, if you really need to, the bottom two screws under the front LED panels come out and can be fitted with longer screws and a ad-hoc base. I took my old speaker mounts and mounted this unit behind our server.

PS: I've never used VPN or application blacklist so I cannot attest to its functionality. But everything else is spot on, exactly what I need.

The kids hate it due to the control I have over their web activities, LOL. This is the best firewall I have used in the SOHO style and I have owned SonicWall and Cisco products that I used at home.

The TP-Link TL-ER604W is a great product. There are very few low cost wireless router firewalls with site to site vpn capability out there. The TP-Link replaced three pieces of equipment, a Juniper Networks firewall router, a Trend Net wireless AP and an HP gigabit switch. They connected my home to a Dell Sonicwall firewall at work. They were working fine until Comcast upgraded me to Extreme 105. The Juniper box was 10/100 only so to get my full speed I had to make some changes. Comcast also talked about offering 250MBPS by the end of the year. Setup of a site to site VPN was as easy as any other box would be. An added bonus was saving 40 watts of power. I recommend this unit highly.
