Add some opensource firmware to this guy and you suddenly have a wireless monitor slash controller for your canon DSLR. You can find the free firmware over a dslrfilmnoob dot com. Battery life is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours and distance for camera control in my testing is around 35 to 40 feet line of site. Well worth the $30 for canon dslr owners.

I really like this device the setup page is good. The only thing is that it is not compatible with many 3G USB modems. I tried 2 different ones from Verizon and neither worked. Tech support is great fast email response on issues.
I travel all over the world and needed a device that I can connect all of my WiFi gear without having to buy more than one internet connection at the hotel. It works flawlessly. I also like that I can connect an Ethernet cable so when I hold seminars I can have the whole group connected.
The battery is great, I can use it to charge my phone if needed.
I give it 5 stars even though I can't use my 3G USB modem.

I was trying to avoid purchasing the expensive WT-5A ($599) that Nikon suggests using to control/view a Nikon D4 camera. I came across this and rolled the dice. After several hours I finally got it to work with my Nikon D4. Just make sure the router is in AP mode (there are 4 modes). It took me a while to set this up because A. I'm not an expert on wireless and B. Neither TP nor Nikon had any knowledge or using this in conjunction with my camera, so I was on my own. TP is sitting on a gold mine and doesn't even know it - they should be marketing this to the D4 crowd.

I sometimes need to program a circuit board in the field that has an ethernet jack on it. Before I'd have to have my laptop close to it so I could connect it to the circuit board.

Now I just connect this guy to the circuit board and my laptop can communicate to the board wirelessly. Using it as a wireless bridge and it having batteries is very convenient. Works perfectly.

Please note this review is for the TP Link MR-3040 Portable Battery Operated Router. Amazon lists this product several different ways which makes it quite confusing.

_____________________________

I was a bit apprehensive about purchasing this product because of the absence of user reviews. Apparently it just came out to the market recently. The product features are not unique as it competes against similar products from Sapido and ZyXEL.

The product presentation itself is quite impressive. It is elegantly designed, very compact and lightweight. There is quite a bit of "Apple-esque" about it. Everything is white, including the cables and wall charger. Even the packaging design is an unusual slide-out box, quite different from the typical packaging of "ordinary" devices. If it did not have a TP Link logo on it, you would swear this device came from Cupertino.

Two minor design items to note: The latch mechanism for the battery cover appears fragile and would expect it to eventually break off. Luckily access to the battery is most likely a onetime deal so it is not that big of a concern. The orientation of the USB jack for the 3G device would have been ideal if it was turned 180 degrees so that the indicator lights are on the same side on both the 3G device and the router.

The various capabilities of this portable router can be easily Googled so I do not have to explain it here. The important factors to me personally are both 3G AND Ethernet capability, plus portable operation with its built-in battery.

After powering up, WiFi connection was established quickly with my laptop, internet connection was also established via the Ethernet source.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
It's light, it's portable, it's battery-powered, and it's highly mobile. So what's not to like about this well designed compact little 3G/3.75G wireless router? That depends on you and how you plan to use it.

The TP-LINK TL-MR3040 3G/3.75G Wireless N150 Portable Router is one of a number of products bearing the N150 designation, and along with having its own internal battery, it offers the ability to share a 3G/4G mobile connection, wherever 3G/4G coverage is available. It can also serve as a WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider) client router, which allows connection to designated 'hot spots' using a wireless connection.

This is a well-designed and solid little device, and it's easy to set up if you follow the directions, which are thorough yet easy to follow. Following the PC directions (and the ones for the Mac are similar), I noted the default SSID and default password that were noted on the N150, then plugged the Ethernet cable into my network port. The N150 was plugged into the power outlet in the wall, then looked for the network name on my computer and entered the password. It was that simple: I had network access.

This wireless portable router is true plug-and-play in the AP (access point) mode, and that's probably just where I'll leave it for general use. Checked it later with my MacBook Pro, my Kindle Fire HD and even with my Samsung Galaxy S III, and all worked just fine.
