Product Description

Extend Your Range

TP-LINK's TL-WA850RE is designed to conveniently extend the coverage and improve the signal strength of an existing wireless network to eliminate “dead zones”. With 300Mbps wireless N speeds, Range Extender button, miniature size and wall mounting design, extending a wireless network has never been easier. What's more, its Ethernet port allows the TL-WA850RE to act as a wireless adapter to turn a wired device into a wireless one.

300Mbps Range Extender

TL-WA850RE can vastly expand the coverage of the existing wireless network. With 300Mbps wireless 802.11n speeds, it is ideal for smooth HD video, music streaming, and online gaming.

Setup with Your Fingertip

To set up the device, users can simply push the WPS button on their router and within two minutes push the RE button on the TL-WA850RE or vice versa. If your router does not have a WPS button, you can access the quick setup mode through the web browser-based user interface. Login credentials are retained internally after setup, allowing you to relocate as needed to generate ideal coverage.

WiFi Your Wired Gadgets

After the range extender is set up, users can connect wired devices such as Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, DVRs, and Internet TVs to the extender via the ethernet port. As a result, those devices are added to the whole wireless network and can access the internet.

Customer Reviews

WiFi signal is now good throughout the house, no dead spots.
Stanley Streicher
Pain to set up and once I had it set up it worked for about a day and then reset the connection every single time for every device and then stopped working altogether.
Ashley Welton
I hate it when people review something that seems to have nothing to do with the product.

I needed this to get a better signal in the upstairs master bedroom. Had no idea what I was doing. Read all the reviews and finally decided to give this one a try. There's a really easy connection option. Just plug it in and press a button on your router and presto, its done. My router didn't have that button. The next option looked really complicated. I despaired but figured, what the heck. Followed the step by step directions easily and up it went! Nothing to it. Moved the repeater upstairs to the hallway, which is quite a distance from my router, and had a full strength wifi connection for the bedroom! It was easy and the price was certainly good. If you're thinking about this one, I'd give it a try.

I was pretty skeptical of the effectiveness of the device due to the low price compared to the competition. Turns out those were unfounded! The directions in the quick start guide are clear and had the device set up in two minutes with the push of two buttons; no connection to a computer was necessary since my router had WPS.

Our router is on the first floor in the office (far east side of the house). I took the extender to the west side basement to test it out. [Test was quickly done using a Samsung Galaxy S3 on Verizon, used the wireless network settings menu to view signal strength and link speed]

Basement without the repeater: Signal strength: Good (one bar), Link Speed: 20 Mbps
Basement with repeater: Signal strength: Very Strong (full bars), Link speed 72 Mbps

So far, so good, but the intended application was for an out-building/ detached shop, located about another 100 feet west of the house (approx 200 feet from router, and multiple walls/obstructions). Only the very closest corner of the shop got signal previously, the rest of the shop the phone switched to 4G LTE.

Out Building without repeater: Signal strength: Poor (no bars indicated, only WiFi icon was lit), Link Speed: 1 to 5 Mbps
Out Building with repeater: Signal strength: Very Good (only missing one bar from full), Link Speed: 58 Mbps

Yeah Buddy! Everywhere in the shop has at least Good signal indicated, and the phone never goes to 4G LTE. Additionally, the Quick Start guide says that the signal shown on the device should show 3 lights for best performance. The outbuilding only gets 1 light (very minimum), but still able to reliably boost the WiFi transfer rate at least 10 fold; impressive.

Another plus; the repeater uses the same network name, so you don't need to add an additional saved network to your phone/laptop/etc. and then worry about switching between the two if you are moving around.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Picked this up at the post office and 5 minutes later had it installed and working! The steps are easy: 1) plug into a wall socket near your wi-fi router. Click the WPS button on the router (mine was right on the front of my NetGear router). 2) Click the button on the front of the product. Done!

My Wi-Fi router is on one side of my house, my wife's PC on the other. Using the Wi-Fi signal alone, she usually had 2, sometimes 3, bars on the task bar's signal strength meter. Now she has all 5. Upstairs, the wireless connection to my iPhone now runs full speed too! Can watch TV on the phone with no dropouts, as in the past!

Opening the box, you will find the small Quick-Start guide which lead me through setup as described above. There is also a mini-Disc with PDF versions of the full User's Guide for two models. The instruction booklet that comes with the device also provides a manual set-up procedure using the router's web interface, and a short network cable that can be used for manual configuration, as well as supplying a direct connection allowing Wi-Fi access to a normally wired device i.e. a blu-ray player. The box promises free tech support 7/24. Did not need support either.

So simple ....

I have a new TP router and even with the ability to use the WPA button push between the two, it didn't connect. The ethernet method was quick though and frankly, I preferred to do it that way anyway. I was only giving the push button a shot to see if it worked. I put the extender in my den where signal to devices was very low most of the time and right off the bat, signal was now excellent there and everywhere in the house in fact. The problem though is the signal on it was only two bars which is not recommended, and a speed test showed that to be true- horrible at DL 3.09 and UL at 4.44. So I moved it to my laundry room, where the signal remains high showing full bars. Even though the extender is in that closed room and not out in the open in the den, the signal on all devices is very good to excellent and speed tests now show DL at 17.41 and UL at 5.29. This for me is respectable. So be advised, the extender will show excellent signal to devices even if the extender itself is showing only 2 bar signal, which is sub par. Do not call it a day with that. Move the extender around until it shows good signal itself. THEN you're really getting the benefit. And don't let a wall stop you from choosing a location for it. If the signal is strong to the extender, it'll still be optimal in other rooms as well. In my den now where signal was very low, it's now excellent and web pages and videos, hbogo, netflicks, chromecast, etc is WAY better. Excellent!

UPDATE- It crashed my network once, so the next thing I did was to update the firmware right away. All has been solid now. It was one firmware rev behind, out of the box. Updating it was very easy. So I think it's a good idea to update the firmware if you have any issues. Wireless is blazing now at 20/5.53 speed tests. Love it so far!
