Product Description

The TPI Corporation 178TMC fan forced portable heater can operate at 1500W or 800W, and has a ceramic-enclosed heating element that provides steady, energy-efficient radiant heat appropriate for spot heating of small rooms and work areas. The steel housing is welded to a combination stand and handle for portability, and includes a thermostat for adjustable temperature control, an automatic reset type limit control and a thermal cutoff device for safety. It includes a 6’ long, three-conductor power cord and is wired for 120V for compatibility with most standard circuits. The unit weighs 8 lb. and is compliant to standards for use in the United States and Canada by United Laboratories (UL).

Electric heaters generate warmth through a central heating element that is housed in a reflective enclosure that concentrates the energy produced. An element made of a combination of metals produces heat or infrared energy by the electrical resistance created when an electric current passes through it. Fan-forced heaters pass air over the heating element to expel heat from the enclosure for greater throw and circulation. Radiant heaters do not use a fan, but warm nearby objects through energy transfer. A heater’s voltage and wiring should be matched to the electrical circuit where it is to be used. Heaters are used in a range of commercial applications that include shop floors, construction sites, and industrial buildings. All local electrical codes should be followed when installing permanent mounted electric heating equipment.

TPI Corporation manufactures industrial and commercial electrical heaters, process heat ovens, ventilation products and fans, lighting equipment, and thermostatic controls. The company, founded in 1950, is headquartered in Johnson City, TN.

I purchased one of these small TPI 178 TMC heaters a few years back and I was honestly never much impressed with it. While it was quiet, it hardly had any air or heat output even when run on max fan and max heating. However, I found a perfect application for it, and that was my above-ground well house. Since it is a small 8 ft x 10 ft well-insulated outbuilding, I actually couldn't have a larger output heater in it during the winter months without it putting too much heat out for the small space. Later, I installed a thermostatically-controlled small baseboard heater in my well house and the TPI heater didn't see a lot of regular use after that (as I had a number of other, better heaters).

Then, when I was recently using it, the black plastic swivel mount housing fractured in half, which completely separated the heater unit from its base, which rendered the heater non-operational. I wrote to TPI to see if I could purchase a replacement plastic swivel mount, but as I surmised before hand, they essentially had no parts for the heater as it was imported with no parts support. After some back and forth, I am pleased to report that TPI stood behind the heater (which was LONG out of warranty), and they shipped me a completely new heater at no charge (even for the shipping). I have to say that I was very impressed with TPI for doing this in an era where customer service can be rather poor and companies' standing behind their products has become something of the exception rather than the rule.

As a bonus, the new TPI 178 TMC heater put out far more heat and fan power than the old one ever did. Based on this, I can in fact recommend this little heater and especially TPI as a company.

I have owned this heater for at least 4 years now and I love it! The heater adjusts so you can blow the air toward your feet, your head, wherever you wish. I have taken this one camping with me and used it in the tent to make fall camping more comfortable. The size is nice and compact so it doesn't take much space.

This little thing puts out some serious heat on its max setting. It heats up my whole garage to a comfortable level when I'm in there in the winter working on my car or whatever. I got it during a lightning deal so I got a great price on it. It also has a no heat fan only mode too which can be helpful in the summer or whatever.

This product was precisely what I had hoped it would be - high quality, sturdy heater with many possible uses. The price is perfectly fair for the quality of the manufacturing, packaging etc.

I bought this for our finished side of basement. I have gym equipment on one side of this room and my daughter's toys on the other side. During our brutal winter (sub-zero) it was too cold to take her down with me when I worked out.

The first time I used it, I turned it on for about 15 minutes before we went downstairs to play (her) and workout (me). I was very happy with the outcome. I would recommend this to others.

Very disappointed in this heater. I bought it based on other reviews. I guess sometimes you just get a "lemon". I bought this due to the cold snap hitting Colorado. I searched long and hard and chose this one. The heat output is typical of any 1500W heater. The fan does blow the heat further than most small heaters. But the workmanship leaves a lot to be desired. The first what the....was the heaters stand. It is crooked and the heater slopes to one side. No biggie. The turn knob that tightens to keep the heater at the angle you desire is a joke. It's a very top heavy heater and the knob only works if the heater is balanced on its stand. It falls forward on its face if bumped or adjusted. You really have to torque the knob down to keep it were you want it. Almost to the breaking point. The fan and heat were great at first. after a few hours of running the fan began to make erratic pulsing noises and continued to get worse. The heat seemed to be fine. But I only ran it for a day. Reading the product description I thought it was made in Johnson City, TN. Upon opening the packaging box, it was in a generic white box with the print on it reading: MADE IN JAPAN. It is just another heater. Not worth the $76.73 I paid for it. It looks tough and solid, but any $20.00 1500W heater is comparable to this unit. Nothing special here.

Heats my garage fine, but my outlet won't handle the high setting. Blows the circuit breaker every time. Currently have 20 amp breakers in but plan to substitute 30 amp and see if that does the job before going to more expense.

I had this heater for several months under my desk now, and I love it. It is usually working on keeping my toes warm, but once its setting "fan only" saved my iPhone that was dropped into water (iPhone recovered after a day of drying and works fine). I don't keep it running all the time, but it heats up in a matter of seconds, so a couple of minutes is enough to get warm. I don't think I would like it on the entire day because I can still hear the fan even though it is not that loud as far as fan forced heaters go.
