I had birds on my mind when I started looking at the Lingo Pacifica Talk, so I checked some words like bird, feather, etc. I found that the encoding for the various languages words apparently does not use Unicode, in any case the vital diacritic marks are missing for several languages. The Spanish word for bird has the stress on the first syllable, which is irregular. Spanish spelling signals the irregularity with an acute accent-mark on the vowel, but this dictionary lacks the diacritic. Russian also needs an accent mark, since stress is unpredictable, but it's missing here (for ALL words). Chinese words need tone marks (just 4 different kinds), but you won't find them here. Japanese also needs diacritics to indicate intonation patterns, but .... you guessed it. The Korean transcription is very sloppy: the letters o and u are used to stand for two different vowels each - how are you supposed to know which one it is, unless you can read the native script, in which case you don't need the transcription. Only the French and German seem to have all the proper diacritics, although as I mentioned they look funny since they're not Unicode. I looked for the words claw and fang, but they weren't there. Vocabulary seems rather limited.
So, this gizmo is good as a toy, but not for serious use.

loved it!, December 30, 2006
I loved this item. I was greatly impressed by the extent of the dictionary and how well it worked to translate into 10 different languages. It comes with everything you need in a great small case that keeps everything together and protected. You can use it with or without headphones. The voice is a computerish voice so its a little hard at times to understand. Its compact and comes with a quick reference guide on how to use it which is very helpful to keep right in the case with it so when your on the go you can use it.
