This review is from: TRENDnet 54Mbps Wireless G USB Adapter TEW-424UB (Personal Computers)
I run a secured wireless network in my home (Linksys Super-G). I bought this adapter for use with an older laptop, which had USB 1.0 ports. On the same network my new laptop's onboard wireless gets 5 bars, this adapter with the old laptop picks up 4. I haven't had any connection dropping problems though. This past weekend I started a 27.3GB set of file transfers when I left for the day, it finally finished 12 hours later. That seems relatively slow, but I never notice much speed lag when I'm surfing the net. I've been impressed with how it's worked considering the laptop is almost a relic; and it nice to be able to get a guest's machine online by letting them borrow the adapter in the house.

inexpensive but with WPA issues,

I bought TEW-424UB (b1 version) few weeks ago; I'm using it under Win2k, with WRT54G router and security features enabled (SSID broadcast off, WPA-PSK on).
The device seems to have reasonable speed when connected, however every once a while the connection gets mysteriously lost or reset, and the adapter connects to (unsecured) neighbor's router instead of mine (despite having much better signal from my router). To reconnect back to my router requires reinstallation of the driver and control utility/application, because the "WPA-PSK" encryption is permanently lost from the selection menu, so there is no way to connect to WPA network again. The device can see my router, however won't let me input WPA key, as if it wouldn't support WPA at all.... The reinstallation of the driver and utility restores the WPA-PSK option; until the next lost connection...this gets old very fast. I wouldn't recommend this adapter if you want to run WPA secured network; it probably works dependably otherwise.

I used this for several months before finally giving up and replaced it with a DLINK G122. I installed the TEW-424UB on a brand new XP PC with the AP located 15 ft away. I rarely saw good signal strength and the data rate rarely peaked. All this was acceptable since my broadband connection only supported ~1Mbps anyway. What really annoyed me was the fact that the connection would die 2 or 3 times a day, requiring reseting the driver or sometimes physically resetting the dongle. After I replaced it with the DLINK G122, I saw excellent signal strenght and 54Mbps data rate from the same exact location.
Given the low price and the fact that the TEW-424UB is not even WiFi certified, what I experienced probably should not have been a surprise. My recommendation is to stay far and away from this product.

A good wireless adapter,

I bought this to give an aging laptop access to my wireless lan at home and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. It came with a USB extension cord which was handy as the laptop I had only came with 1 USB port and was right next to the PS2 port so it would have been impossible to attach both without the extra cord. Setup was fairly easy and I had to download the latest utility from the website but that was no problem. I have not tried any other wireless USB devices to compare to this one but I imagine they are mostly identical in how they work.

Trendnet USB adapter performance Win Xp problem solved,

I to was at first very dissatisfied with this product and if you follow the instructions by the MFG you will be too. After speaking with a Trednet tech he explained to me that if the driver and utility were on the CD in separate folders that you DID NOT need to install the Trendnet utility for the USB adapter to function in Win Xp.So I uninstalled everything and upon a restart I EXPLORED the install CD, do not let autorun do any install and verified the driver and utility were in separate folders I then plugged in the adapter and let windows install the driver with me selecting the driver to install rather than letting windows do the whole thing and now it works just as well as my Dlink PCMCIA airplus card.So it apears that my issue and hopefully most of yours are due to bad software specifically the Trendnet utility not hardware. Hope this helps many.

No issue here. Using this device on a 2nd XP computer for wireless internet access. Using it with a 802.11b Netgear router. Set up was easy. Product has a rebate too. Great price...works great.

Horrible Product,
This review is from: TRENDnet 54Mbps Wireless G USB Adapter TEW-424UB (Personal Computers)
I bought this product and within the first week, it broke. It just died and would not power up. Trendnet made me pay to post the broken one back, and TWO WEEKS later, I get a replacement. But the replacement was broken and then they asked me to mail it back to them! Also, they have some serious privacy policy issues because when I filled out a replacement request online for the broken one the sent me, I could see a list of all the previous owners and the technical support notes that were logged in. The previous owners had the same problems I had...what a surprise! Trendnet customer service is appalling and I recommend paying a few extra dollars for a quality product.
Amazon, on the other hand, has been wonderful. When I could not resolve my problem with Trendnet, they stepped in and helped me to get a working replacement.

Bought one of these instead of a $50 Dell unit for the office -- doesn't look quite as nice as the Dell, but it's hidden behind the PC box so who cares?
Functions perfectly, quick/ez install, no worries out of the box. Download speeds are = or > than the Dell (we have 3 of those). I usually don't bother to write reviews but I'm irritated when the market is charging double what should be the going rate -- go with this item so long as the price remains sub $30!!!

Strong signal pickup - miserable drivers,

This review is from: TRENDnet 54Mbps Wireless G USB Adapter TEW-424UB (Personal Computers)
This got a much more reliable signal for me than my previous usb 802.11 adapters. However, the drivers caused my Windows XP machine to freeze up completely, requiring a hard reset, every 5 minutes until I gave up and uninstalled the drivers. I tried both the drivers on the CD with the product, as well as the downloadable drivers from the TrendNet site.
So, I've given up and am looking for another brand. I would not recommend this product.

I was skeptical on this adapter based on it's low price($20). I've been using it on a desktop pc for a couple months now and it has been great, no issues at all, performance is fine for a cable broadband connection and it has never dropped a signal. I would recommend it for anyone looking for an adapter for desktop or laptop. Very convenient when you want to take internet away from the kids, just plug and/or unplug the adapter on the fly!!
