This unit is whisper quiet with a good bit of capability under the hood. It's gigabit NIC port allows for speedy transfers from other systems with gb ports configured. I have mine configured with dual Western Digital 1.0 TB SATA HDD's and it works fine. As I do enjoy this unit, a few minor quirks are as follows.

1. My external Maxtor 1 TB USB Hard drive would not work on the external USB ports causing me to purchase 2 internal TB drives.

2. The web enabled admin interface does not allow for user groups. It's a user by user configuration for each share that you make.

3. The application that comes with the unit REQUIRES one Windows flavor OS based computer to initally configure the device.

4. The media server system works with the ITunes, but documentation is lacking about how the configuration is accomplished.

5. After you assemble the HDD rails, it is a really tight fit to slide the drives into the unit. (also look out for the sata ribbon cables getting in the way on the left side when sliding the drives in.)

I'd purchase another one because it does do what it says, and once it is up and running, you can forget about it.

I bought a TS-S402 back in May, and since then I've burned up two drives. I have them mirrored, and when one burns up I have to copy ALL the data off the drive, then replace the bad drive. The NAS will not rebuild the new drive on its own. I have to FORMAT the new RAID array, then copy all the data back over. This process (aside from the $360 in replacement drives) costs me an entire week of work. By the way, the NAS I'm running now is the second one. Trendnet replaced my first one, but the new one has the same problems.

Well (and if I start with "well" it's usually not good), I have bought this NAS mainly for its DLNA advertised feature to be able to stream media files to my new Sony Bravia XBR9.
This unit was advertised to come with a boat load of servers and I haven't test them all but the ones important for me did not work.
To say a few good words, this NAS would be a good value because it comes with a nice utility and web interface, a good set of features which are easy to set up, create shares/folders, set up users and permissions, power management, etc.
Anyway, these are my issues:
___After upgrading the firmware and package, I get a "broken" status on my RAID-1.
I have reset the unit and reconfigured the settings but no success.
I am using brand new SATA drives which worked just fine before FW upgrade.
Reformatting the drives (ext-3) did not help either.
___My Sony TV DLNA client works fine with Windows Media Player 11 enabled as media server on my PC, and although the TV also sees and identifies the TS-S402 NAS on the network, it says that it is not supported.
I am being told by Trendnet tech support that the so called iTunes server is actually the DLNA server and needs to be enabled and configured.
I have enabled and configured it and the ALL the servers on my NAS (UPnP, etc) and still no success:
-When I did the firmware and package update, I followed the instructions to the letter, then reset the unit and reconfigured it.
-The iTunes server is not seen by neither the TV nor the Windows Media Player 11(used as DLNA client).
-The UPnP server on the other hand, is being seen by both, BUT none of them can see any media on the shared server folder.
-All the devices are on the same network level.

The product works ok; it was not easy to configure. Once in a while, all configurations were gone!!! Data was not affected. Mine went on reboot cycles indefinite when 2yrs up. We started up a device when needed usually about once/month.
I'm looking for a way to recover data and buy another NAS, not TRENDnet product.
