Have had no problems with this item. Didn't come with mounting screws, but does have the slots for 2 screws. I had to open it up and break off the plastic tabs to get the screws to fit though. Great for the price.

For the price ($16.00) I could not find a better one. Sure, it doesn't have extra diagnostic lights- but it does have one light for each port. They illuminate when a device is connected and flash when active. That is all I needed, as I can access other diagnostics from the computer itself.

Set up was about as easy as it gets. I simply plugged the unit into a wall outlet and plugged the ethernet cables from wall jacks into it. No Fuss No Muss!

My science project of a system is kind of unusual, as every room's ethernet jack leads to a central, basement, location and terminates with a RJ-45 style plug. It is far away from where the router/modem must be for our wireless signal to reach both desired places to use our laptops (& the neighbor's house & the guy parked out front) I put this switch at that central location and ran a short jumper (patch cord) from the router/modem into an ethernet wall jack on the second floor. The switch was smart enough to figure this out. I didn't even need a cross over cable. To the hard wired computers, another patch cord runs from any wall jack to each computer. Those jacks lead to the central location & plug into this switch. There is no specified "Up-Link" port, so your router can be moved in the building from jack to jack without worrying about moving jumpers in this switch. It won't care which one has the router plugged into it. Set it up & leave it alone forever. How cool is that? (Maybe not so cool, I'll have to remember to dust it every so often!)

I tested it on two hard wired Apple computers, running OSX 10.4.11 & on a PC running Windows XP Professional. I also tested it on a Windows 98SE machine (Ugh!) All performed flawlessly. It has more ports than I need, so I'll have extra when I move things around and add new ethernet jacks- Or go high tech and get television feeds that require an internet connection.

The enclosure isn't the most heavy duty thing I've ever seen, but not wimpy either. This item sits on a shelf above the cinder block wall in my basement. It will never get bashed or dropped. My guess, however, it that it would survive some jostling around. It must be at least fairly resistant to damage: The box it shipped to me in didn't fit! The flaps didn't meet because all of the items I bought were too tall for the box. (knuckle heads!) The mail carrier had it sticking out of her pouch all day- in a snow storm. The box was loaded with snow and the device soaked! I let it dry for a few days before I hooked it up. Still, no problems! (I bought it through Amazon, so if it did not work, I imagine they would have exchanged with no problems.)

It is small enough to carry to meetings where multiple people try to share an internet connection with a single router port in the room. (The same company sells a 5 port that's even smaller.) It has rubber button feet so it won't scratch your Louix XV desk.

For power consumption, it is rated 2.8 watts, maximum. I put a meter on it and had 3 devices accessing the switch at once. It drew 1.31 watts. At idle, it drew 1.02. So, this will cost me, at most, $3.00 per year to have. (I must be bored today!) Speaking of the transformer: It is a plug style (the transformer-rectifier has the prongs on it to plug into the wall outlet). The block is very small and angled. It didn't crowd anything out. It is narrower than the outlet face, so it would fit very well into a crowded Power Strip thing. Rejoice!!

The directions leave something to be desired. It says, basically, "Plug It In Plug In Your Computers" "Can't Share An Internet Connection" True, it wouldn't share an internet connection by itself. You still need a router. (In my case, the router is part of the modem assembly.) I would guess if you had trouble, the company's tech support would help. It's a legitimate company.

Overall: Well designed, Well Executed, Very Well Priced. I would not hesitate to buy another one. (You know, when I get the mansion and need an ethernet port near the indoor pool and yacht dock.)

I am no techie by any stretch of the imagination. I've used this to network different usb products as well as different rooms in the houses (prior owner created connections for every room in the house - pre wireless) and it works great. I've had zero problems and it was very easy to set up - plug and use.
