This review is from: TRENDnet 8-Port GREENnet Switch (8 x 10/100Mbps Auto-Negotiation RJ-45 ports) TE100-S80g (Black Metal) (Personal Computers)
This switch is great. I've been working with computers and networking since the early 90's (anyone else remember Mosaic?), and I've had to deal with a lot of switches that required manually setting every little thing in order to get it to work - and of course every type of router you were connecting the switch to required different settings. This switch is absolutely plug-n-play. If your broadband (cable, DSL) router is filled up and you need to add another network device, you cannot go wrong with this switch. The documentation is horrible, perhaps even a bit misleading. In the troubleshooting section, it says something about the switch not being designed to allow more than one computer to access the internet. Well, that's technically true...you can't just have a switch and really do anything with it...but if you have broadband access, you have a router (technically, that box on your desk is a router plus a 4-port switch) so that is already taken care of. So...here's the details on how to get all your computers, network printers, network storage, game consoles, blu-ray players, etc. to talk to each other and the internet. Be sure to follow these instructions exactly... 1. Turn off all your computers, printers, etc., and the broadband router. 2. Unplug something (anything, it doesn't matter what, but I usually use port 1) from the broadband router. 3. Run a short ethernet cable between the port on the router you just freed up and ANY port on the switch. 4. Plug the thing you just unplugged and everything new into the switch. 5. Plug the switch AC adapter into the wall and the back of the switch. 6. Turn everything back on. THAT'S IT! How could it get any easier than that? I think TRENDnet is really missing a selling point here by not stressing how easy this switch is to add to your existing network! I don't know, and honestly I'm not going to try and measure, how much energy is actually saved by the graduated power sent to the ports based on cable length, but I think it's a nice feature to shut down power to a port if the device is idle for long periods of time. So far, I can't think of a single bad thing to say about this switch. When I first pulled it out of the box, I thought it was a bit light (even though it is made out of metal and not cheap-o plastic) to stay on the desk when 8 cables are plugged into it...but then I noticed that they even included a square of velcro to attach to the desk and switch so it wouldn't move around. Summary: if you need to expand the number of ports in your network, buy this switch.

I needed to find a solution to connect my stereo gear to the internet because some of the new equipment required internet connection to stream audio/video and to update the hardware. This TRENDnet switch works flawlwssly. The best points:- It is very small and hides well behind all of the stereo equipment. - It only gives full power to occupied ports to save energy. - brainless setup - sturdy build with a metal case I just plugged the internet connection from my DSL router into port one and everything else into the other ports and I was good to go.

I was given one of the 5 port models of this switch about eight years ago and even though it already had a few quirks (had to be powered off/on occasionally), it served well for my needs.I recently replaced it with this model and haven't had any issues. Unbox, connect cables and power on. Not much more to it than that. The casing is tough and pretty small. It sits on a shelf beneath my desk next to my xDSL modem. Would definitely buy again.

Bought this to share files between PC's. Works great and easy to set up. This isn't a network router so don't expect to share one internet connection with a bunch of PC's.

Bought this ethernet switch so that I can hook up two computers to the internet. Works perfectly fine, just remember to purchase another ethernet unless you already have one, so that you can hook the switch to the ethernet jack, and then another ethernet cable(s) to hook up your other devices. So far, this switch has been working perfectly for me, it even has a energy saving option that might be useful for people looking to cut down on some energy bills, it does however require that you plug a jack into the wall to power the switch. The switch is pretty well built, and solid, I am surprised at how small it is, you can fit it into the palm of your hand, and it's very easy to conceal. Plus there are lights that blink to show that you have a internet connection on the devices that are connected to the switch. Overall I recommend this switch if you need to connect a few devices to the internet by ethernet, however if you need more than 5 ports, buy one that has more.

I needed to replace my 17-month old D-Link 24-port switch and opted for this TrendNet model based on price and customer ratings. I must say that this is a great switch for the money. I cannot comment on it's "green" viability but it's nice to know that it will use less energy as I leave it running 24/7 (like any network switch). The lights are easy to read and the switch is very responsive. I run my AT&T Uverse TV, several computers, and a wifi access point through it so it gets plenty of traffic with no perceived bottlenecks. The only thing better would be a gigabit switch but not every device on my network needs that kind of bandwidth. The only downside to this switch is it's side, it's considerably wider than the 24-port D-link that it replaced. However, I'm hoping that it will be more reliable than the one it replaced. If not for it's wide width, I'd have given it 5 stars.

I purchased this switch to hook up my AV center components (TV, PS3, Wii, XBOX 360) to my wired home network to allow them to access the internet. At the price point of this device how could you not just spring for it? I got the item in two days (thanks prime!) and it was smaller than I expected at slightly longer than a box of playing cards. The device was easy to hook up, easy to zip tie to the back of my tv stand, and all the components that I hooked up to it worked and continue to work months later. The GREENnet switch works in full duplex mode of 100Mb up and 100Mb down and I have had zero issues with latency, bottlenecks, or dropped/unstable connections from the switch. The manual for the device says that it does not allow multiple devices to use the internet at one time. This however is not the case (at least with mine)as I've watched Netflix on VIA (Vizio Internet Apps) on my TV while downloading the latest firmware update for my PS3. I could not be happier with my purchase of this item. Once Verizon FioS releases a home router with gigabit Ethernet ports I will be upgrading to the gigabit Ethernet variant of this switch.

I purchased this switch for my home theater. Just about every device I add to the home theater has its own network connection and for gaming and streaming movies, wireless just does not do the job. This device replaced an older 5 port Cisco switch that had developed a bad port after 2 years. This switch feels like it is of a much higher quality build and is easy to set up.

I'm no computer expert, but I needed extra ports for my wireless router. I ordered this switch based on the ease of use others were claiming. I had my doubts, but now I'm a believer. They were right. I simply plugged it in and it worked! No configuring, no reading instructions, no searching online for a manual. Plug and play away. If you're looking for expensive, complicated technology look elsewhere. This switch is cheap and easy--just the way I like it (insert your own joke).
