4.0 out of 5 stars Handy Dandy Tool
It's a great dongle to keep around when you need an ethernet connection. It's too bad you still have to keep the driver disk around as the drivers are not built into Windows.

Operation couldn't be simpler and also works with Vista.

It wouldn't bridge in VMWare, but you can still use it with Virtual Server.

Item was purchased to use with new MacBook Air, so gigabit was key in its selection. It arrived intact and well packed, and when connected to the MacBook, the computer sensed it, but it would not ever work. I called Trenenet tech service, and they seemed to know nothing. After about forty minutes' discussion with a number of agents, the gist was that the item is NOT Mac compatible, even though it says on its label that it is. I sent the thing back and bought the Apple item for that purpose.

If I could have given this product a zero star or even better a negative star review I would have.

I have a MacBook Air which is running Fusion. I made a virtual machine and installed Window 7 Professional 64 bit. I installed Office, Photoshop, and a few utilities. All was well except I couldn't activate windows or get updates because Windows I don't have a wireless connection and the Air doesn't have an Ethernet connector. So I bought this Trendnet USB to Ethernet adapter which works -- it says -- with Windows 7 64 bit and Lion. Perfect. NOT!!!

Following instructions I did setup without the device connected. Then I connected the adapter and as stated the driver loaded just fine. Then I connected the network cable. Still all was ok. Then I started Firefox.

BAD MOVE.

The system instantly went to the infamous Blue Screen of Death. I tried rebooting and the same thing happened. I tried the next time to boot Windows using safe mode.

NOPE. THAT DID ME IN.

Now the system now will not boot because Safe mode fails.

I called Trendnet tech support and once they heard that I was using it on a Mac running VM they bailed. Sorry it won't work. But it doesn't say that anywhere, not on the data sheet, not on quick install guide, not on the user manual. No warning anywhere. Sorry it won't work. Click.

Am I pissed!!!!

Never will I use a TrendNet product again. They are off the list. I hope you boycott them too.

Alan

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful!, January 24, 2012

I bought two of these, one for my Macbook Air, one for my wife's Acer Aspire S3, hoping to speed up backups at home and to use on a business trip in a hotel that didn't have wifi.

On the S3 (running Windows 7) it was a disaster: The driver blue-screened constantly, and it was anything but speedy. We made sure we had the latest driver from the manufacturer's website.

On the Macbook, it didn't work. OS X Lion recognized the dongle as a USB network device, but couldn't negotiate a network address, and when I hard-coded that, it dropped packets like crazy and was basically useless.

So, in short, I wouldn't bother.

I've bought 2 of these because of problems with the network connection with the two all-in-one Dells in the office. They have worked flawlessly for the last month. No more dropped connections.

I hook this adapter up and didn't need the drivers that came with it. I'm using WINDOWS 7 Premium. It loaded up and was using it with 3 minutes.

Disappointed with this item
Could not use with Windows 7 Pro
Drivers are not compatible for the Gigabit Port
Adaptor works at 100 Megabits Per Second speed only no 1000 Megabits Per Second

I apparently have had better luck with this product than some others on this site. After reading many reviews on numerous sites, I decided to take a chance. Result, complete success. After simple installation, plug it in and away it went. Instant communication with my modem. Highly pleased.

Not worth all the hassle testing and trying. It may work for some specific computer configuration. But it does not work with me Dell 1210 with XP SP2.

Mac users beware -- this adaptor requires Windows-only drivers. The Linksys USB Ethernet adaptor is not as fast, but it works flawlessly right out of the box, no additional software:

[...]

Note to TRENDnet: "PC" is not a platform.
