There is a lot to like about this router. As other reviewers have pointed out, it can be run right out of the box. It is already pre-configured with two secure WLAN's: one at 2.5ghz, and the other at 5ghz. The administrative login and WLAN password are on a sticker attached to the shrink-wrap. However, because I was replacing an older router, and didn't want to face reconfiguring all my devices, I overwrote the default settings on the router to match those on the one I replaced.

There was one discrepancy between the documentation and the firmware interface. The documentation says that MAC filtering can be applied to the LAN interface, the WAN interface, or both. However, this capability is not available in the firmware. If you enable MAC filtering, the filter will apply across all WLAN's, including the Guest network. After some back-and-forth with Trendnet tech support, it turns out that this feature is not available, even though it was mentioned in the documentation.

The router does suppport the DD-WRT firmware. There's a version that can be downloaded from the Trendnet web site, but the DD-WRT site offers a newer version. I will probably install this at some point.

The only minor irritation I've found with this router is that it doesn't come with a stand. True, it is wide enough to stand on end by itself, but with a lot of Ethernet cables plugged into it, it's not terribly stable, especially if you have it on Metro shelving as I do.

This router provides a lot of bang for the buck. The native firmware is reasonably easy to use, and provides as many features as most folks would want, including a guest network that can be configured to not interact either with your LAN, or with other guests. I am quite pleased with this router, and would not hesitate to recommend it.

UPDATE 12/5/2014

For the past week and a half, this router has increasingly been dropping DNS resolution to LAN and wifi clients alike. Wifi is the most common victim, but it occasionally hits the wired machines as well. The only resolution is to hard-boot the router. When it starts throwing a fit, I am able to maintain connections where I already have the IP address (as well as directly connect to any external services via ip) on both wired and wireless, but any new DNS requests fail. On an affected computer (again, does't matter if it's wired or wireless), I am able to open up the NIC (network interface card) configuration and statically configure the DNS to Google's DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4), while leaving the IP address configured for DHCP, and am magically able to resolve again. Upon switching back to dynamic DNS discovery (provided by the gateway: the router), resolution fails again. These circumstances are the same whether I use my ISP's DNS or if I go into the router configuration and statically point to Google's DNS servers.

I was one firmware version behind, so I updated to the latest version. This did not fix anything.
(side note: In my original review, I mentioned using dd-wrt. Shortly after setting this up for prime time, the dd-wrt performance on this device proved to be a bit problematic. It kept overheating and restarting (even underclocked at 800mhz), so I reverted back to stock firmware)

There is no consistency as to what triggers the issue. It has happened as early as an hour after the last reboot, but also has lasted up to ~8 hours before acting up again.

I am revising my initial review of 4 stars down to 2 stars. It was ok while it lasted (After using it for months, it didn't really stand out as an exceptional device.

The router worked fine for a couple of weeks and then gradually started dropping internet on wireless connections for a few seconds. At first it was only every day or two, but it gradually increased in frequency until it was happening every 10-15 minutes. The connections would only drop for a few seconds, but enough to disconnect from a work VPN. Finally the router would no longer allow wireless access to the internet at all. I submitted a support ticket to TRENDnet 4 days ago, but they have not responded in any way to the failure of their product, which is all of 40 days old. If they bother to respond and actually support their product, I will update this review, but right now I am very disappointed with this product and the lack of any response from their support. I don't expect them to overnight a replacement router, I do expect them to respond to the ticket that was submitted and offer some sort of support for their product, no matter how trite.

Update:
It has been two months since I received the replacement router and it has worked without issue. The return/replacement process was not overly difficult or time consuming, but it is frustrating to have to pay to ship a defective device to have the warranty honored. I have been happy with the router performance and am happy to have the device I ordered actually working. I have increased my rating to three stars because I am happy with the device performance, but the initial experience will prevent me from rating it higher. If anything changes, I will post an update.
