4.0 out of 5 stars Decent remote ip camera for home applications
A decent remote ip camera for home applications. Setup was easy, although I have set up similar products before. Shipped camera did not work properly in Firefox, although after I downloaded the upgraded firmware the issue was addressed. Focus is not great in low-light situations, but acceptable. 2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought.....Still an average wireless camera
I bought this camera for the pan/tilt feature, but I found out that it does not work with well with Vista. I also thought the video would be as good as the TV-IP110W fixed wireless camera, but it is not. I am an IT guy and I have used several cameras and this is one of the worst I have ever used. I do wish Trendnet would get their act together and make a pan/tilt...

I would recommend for the casual home user, but would suggest a more expensive version for business applications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Beat the Features and the Price!!!, August 21, 2008
This review is from: TRENDnet ProView Wireless Advanced Pan/Tilt/Zoom Internet Surveillance Camera TV-IP400W (Electronics)
I bought one for my house 1 1/2 years ago so I could see my cat when I was out on business, then I bought another one 4 months ago to monitor the back entry and traffic area. I haven't had problems with them and setup was relatively simple, after following the instructions.

I am a very detailed person and compared feature to feature, this product to similar D-Link and Linksys models. TRENDnet beats them on features and the price is 1/2 of that of D-Link.

You can pan and tilt the camera when you are out on business and it sends me email alerts when motion dection is triggered.

I wish they had this deal 4 month's ago!!!!!!

This is an amazing price...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great device for the money, October 10, 2007
By
I purchased this camera to use at my cabin. I have trouble keeping a computer with a conventional webcam alive when I'm not there, so this was a great solution since it plugs straight into the router and functions without a computer. I find the picture quality to be good as long as there is adequate lighting. Actually, you can see quite a bit even in low light. I haven't been able to figure out how to put the video feed onto a separate web page, otherwise I would give the camera five stars. Programming the router for remote access via your ISP is not all that easy, but it can be done with a little understanding of IP addressing and networks. The camera has an amazing pan and tilt range!

2.0 out of 5 stars Could have been great, January 11, 2008
By
Short story: Would be great IF it worked and was reliable.

Had a little difficulty in the beginning because the picture would not show, and the camera controls worked sparatically, even directly connected. Then, suddenly one day just before returning it, I had a picture and could control the camera from my home PC. Again, a few days later, I had problems controlling the movements from the internet, some times it would work, most times not, even directly conneted. Then Exactly 1 month after purchase, I could not recieve the video from any computer or connection.

Also, the manual was pretty good. But, it would be much better if they explained more on how to set up the camera's more complicated internet settings (FTP and SMTP). Most people do not have a clue.

When it worked, and for the price. The picture quality was very decent, fairing better in low-light situations than most web cams I have used. Kinda washed out in bright light, or reflected light situations. Also, movement control worked pretty decently.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool, but careful with the Java Applets, September 29, 2007

Works as advertised, but the Java plugin is mysterious. I can't get it to work in Java mode on my Vista based PC, but it does on XP. None of my Macs can do it over the web. Active X in Explorer works fine. A bit pickier than the stationary trendnets.

Camera works great, easy setup, worth the price. Just be aware you're not going to view live motion with anything by Windows Explorer and Active X.

4.0 out of 5 stars camera works well, good value, April 3, 2010

I bought this model camera a few years ago, and have just bought another. I'm not an IT person, but with the help of the Users Guide, and a very helpful tech support person, it's working well. The camera comes with a Quick Start Guide, but there is additional documentation available from the Trendnet web site - the Users Guide, FAQs and one on remote web access, all as pdf docs. It's worth taking the time to read everything and understand the steps to get it working. Even if you don't understand the ins and outs of network configuration, you can get it going by just carefully following their instructions. The difficult part is making the camera visible via the Internet, because there is a lot of variability in how each local network connects to the Internet.
With the older camera, I could view the video with Safari, but could not control pan and tilt. Worked OK using ActiveX with IE (running in XP as a virtual machine on my Mac). But the preset position settings did not work at all. That's when I emailed Trendnet tech support, who recommended a firmware upgrade (to version 3.36). That process was trickier than the original setup, but I got it done. The user interface looks quite different from the older version (version 3.17). But the really good news is that I can now control the camera from both Windows IE and Mac's Safari, including configuring and using preset positions.
I can't view the video on my iphone, as it requires java. However, I did find an app called Cam Viewer that works. I don't see video in real time, but as a series of still images with a user-settable refresh rate. Good enough to accomplish what I wanted.
I was impressed with the Trendnet tech support - I got a prompt response to my email, the person was knowledgeable, and stuck with me through several questions until I got it all working.

4.0 out of 5 stars Expert setup needed, October 16, 2008
This review is from: TRENDnet ProView Wireless Advanced Pan/Tilt/Zoom Internet Surveillance Camera TV-IP400W (Electronics)
This webcam works reliably for me and does what I bought it for, but the network setup was certainly challenging. To be fair it's the same situation with other similar internet camera products, but I would definitely not recommend that anyone new to networking take this on without expert help. The setup is complex, the manual is sketchy, and there are some bugs to overcome. Once you get past the initial installation and setup, it's easy to connect remotely and see what's going on in the vicinity of the camera (silently though, there's no microphone). I can connect successfully from my WinXP notebook (Firefox), my Nokia N800 linux tablet, or my Windows Mobile cell phone. The picture gets fuzzier in low light, and the frame rate of video is slow over a wireless connection, but it works well enough.
