If the woes of the newspaper business could be dashed away simply with enthusiasm and chutzpah, the executive team at Tribune Co. would surely be in the lead to fix everything around us.
But since the industry's solutions are probably going to need a wide variety of skills -- not just flamboyance and self-assurance -- critics of the new managers at Tribune had a field day or six last week after the company said that it plans to cut back its metropolitan dailies to a 50-50 ad-edit ratio and make corresponding staff cuts to "right-size" its papers.
