3.0 out of 5 stars Huge bang for your buck
I have searched high and low for portable speakers to use with my laptop and been very disappointed. Either they cost a fortune and eat a ton of batteries or they might as well be a set of tin cans and string. After buying a set of fold up junk for $15 that wasn't even as loud as the built-in speakers on my computer, I figured that $5 more wasn't going to get me...

I rated this 5 stars based on its utility for my laptop. The device itself is quite compact, appears to be sturdily built, and is easy to use. I have Windows XP and after plugging it into a usb port it was recognized immediately and ready to play. The sound quality is mainly midrange - unlike another reviewer I did not hear deep base, and nor is the treble very extended. But the sound is clear, it plays at sufficient loudness, and it sounds WAY better than a normal laptop speaker. This isn't audiophile-grade hi-fi sound, but it is very decent sound in a nicely built, attractive and easily transportable package. It also comes with software to adjust the sound but I haven't installed this; it sounds fine without it. Definitely a big improvement over built-in laptop speakers.

Tried them all, this by far the best bang for your buck. No external power pack to mess with. The sound will fill a pretty good size room.

4.0 out of 5 stars I am simply amazed with these, July 12, 2005
This review is from: TRITTON SOUND BITE USB 2.1 PORT (TRI-UA201) (Electronics)
I recently moved from a 17 inch Powerbook (with really nice speakers, good and loud) to a 12 inch Powerbook (much smaller, with speakers you can't really hear in a crowded room). I got these speakers on a whim for use in anime conventions (we display movies to our products on the Powerbook), and I was really impressed with them. Bass that you can really feel, good quality sound, and tiny portable size. Best of all, these are USB powered, which is really elegant. They also work fine with Mac OS X (10.4 in my case), and without drivers of any kind (very nice and Mac-like).

After buying a set of fold up junk for $15 that wasn't even as loud as the built-in speakers on my computer, I figured that $5 more wasn't going to get me anything better. Boy, was I in for a surprise! This setup is AMAZING! It gets a little rattle to it if you crank the bass way up (as does any box in the back of a pimped out lowrider), but otherwise it rivals my desktop subwoofer setup. It comes bundled with Xear software that will just blow you away. The best part is NO BATTERIES!! This was definitely money well spent.

I had built a desktop mini-itx system and couldnt get any sound from the output jacks. I was too lazy to try to 'tinker' with it so opted for USB speakers instead. Read through the reviews here and given the price with free shipping (at the time) thought I would give it a try. No complaints here.

Again - these are not high fidelity speakers but they are very good speakers. Sounds comes through loud and clear.Very easy to install on XP - no drivers needed; plug and play. Driver is included for 5.1 effects, etc but I did not install them. USB cable wraps around base - all one piece design - no need to carry around 2 speakers, cables, etc. Very compact. Will not disappoint. Great for those on the go with 'lousy' laptop speakers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Way better than stock Dell speaker, September 9, 2007

My company laptop is a Dell D620. It has one tiny little speaker somewhere under the keyboard that's hard to hear in a noisy room. I've been looking for some kind of external speakers to use with the Dell, but I wanted something small enough to carry around in the laptop bag that still sounded OK.

I've seen several other speaker sets that had great reviews and supposedly sounded great, but they are all a lot bigger, or need batteries, or need an external power supply.

This little Tritton serves my needs very well.
It's small enough to fit in my laptop bag.
It's built solid enough that I can cram it in my bag with all my other goodies and not worry about it getting broken.
It does not need batteries or an external power supply.
I like the way the USB cord wraps up under the speaker so it's not getting tangled up with my other stuff when its in my laptop bag.

All I had to do was plug it into my USB port. Windows XP recognized the C Media USB sound device and loaded all the drivers. Windows even automatically disables the internal audio when I plug in the Tritton. I just plug it into the laptop and it works. So nice and easy.

The sound is much better and much louder than the built-in Dell speaker. I wish it had more bass and treble, but I knew I was sacrificing some sound quality for the small size and it's still a great improvement over the stock speaker.

I should mention that the package includes a mini CD ROM that has software which includes an equalizer function. That might help the sound quality even more, but I didn't load the CD ROM. I like to keep things simple and the sound quality is really OK the way it is.

I'll keep an eye out for a better sounding laptop speaker system, but I doubt I'll find anything as small, rugged, and convenient as the Tritton.

I need a USB speaker(s) to travel with to play games and listen to movies in hotels...I also use my XPS 1210 at home to game, as usual the speakers are really bad. Fits nicely in my small travel bag with the 1210.

This was great, plenty of volumne, easy just plug it in. I would buy another one today if this one died...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound!, November 9, 2006

Very portable (cute little package) with decent bass for its size. I shopped around for a while before I settled on thses. Decided to go with this one b/c it was reviewed by some magazine (PC World?) as having quality bass (a significant shortcoming of small portable speakers). Also liked it b/c it's small and light (wish it was super thin though -- that would be easier to pack). It uses the laptop for a power source (through USB) so if not connected to a power source it might drain your battery, but I haven't tried that. Overall, for price, size, quality of sound, it was the best out there! Highly recommend.

Update July 2008: I've used this little guy quite a few times since purchasing (mostly on trips). Recently, I used it in a medium-size conference room for audio for a movie (the sounds system they had wasn't working). Not only did everyone hear everything without any problem (great projection) but it sounded like an installed sound system. I don't know how they get that much bass from such a little thing, but it works! Recently used it on a camping trip for movies from the laptop -- sounded like I was at home. Still highly recommend -- it was one of the best purchases I've ever made.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the sound quality that comes from these speakers. I do not recommend installing the software, though. I did it and the quality of the sound was actually decreased. So I uninstalled the software and the excellent sound quality was back. The volume level capability is impressive, too.

This is the third portable, usb speaker I've purchased for my laptops. But, this is the only one that actually works, and it works very well. Crisp, clear sound that has good volume (as compared to the other small speakers, which were barely an improvement over the built-in laptop speakers) and a good range of sound. You don't have to install the software that comes with it, which I couldn't do because it's not supported on Windows Vista. But, even without the software, it is brilliant. I'm going to buy another one for my other laptop now!

UPDATE 3/3/2010: After almost 3 years, this speaker is still going strong for me. Fantastic!
