They only work 9-6 PST.
Has a ton of features, all of which are nicely laid out with a very good UI that makes it all pretty straight forward, and I'm also loving the mobile apps.

If you have a working model, then you'll probably rate it higher than me. But that goes for any product. The product gets one star from me, not just because it's had problems, but because their customer service has been a major headache for me.

Since day 1 I've had problems with this unit. I put in two brand new 2TB Seagate Barracuda drives in RAID 1 format. Some times the NAS would disappear from the network - seemingly hung up on some internal process. I tried a soft reboot, but all it would do it just flash its lights - which doesn't tell you much about what it's doing, other than it's trying to reboot. It will sit there and blink for days if you let it (I even tried that). So I had to do a couple hard resets in order to get the NAS back online. Thinking a firmware update would help, after completing the update, it asked if I wanted to reboot, I clicked yes, and after some more blinky lights I could no longer access the NAS by the assigned name. The name had been reset to the default, my data was no longer accessible, the firmware version was not updated.

I contacted QNAP and was connected with a level one customer service rep and within the first minute he was telling me there was absolutely nothing wrong with the unit, and it was definitely the fault of my drives - without asking all of the details about what was causing it.

Summarized problems:
- The device does not accurately report problems when they occur. Lots of flashy/blinky lights. And a four line chart to troubleshoot your issue. No logging to specify the error
- Incessant scans/rescans and the inability to reboot on my particular device
- Their level one tech was poorly educated and blamed me and my hard drives within the first minute of the phone call.

I'm an IT guy, so I kind of know my way around things like this. But I use Windows, and while this box supports Windows, the configuration required to make it work isn't very clear. Initially it worked, but every morning it had lost connection to my Windows machines and I had to restart the box to re-establish the connection. Then I found the user forum ([...]), where I found a recommendation to enable "Master Browser" on the QNAP box. After I did that, I didn't have any other real issues.

This is my first NAS unit and I equipped it with two 3TB WD Red drives, the NAS is connected by CAT6 Ethernet directly to my Modem.

The Bad:

The NAS reboots every once in a while resulting in a long wait while streaming a movie to my Xbox360, also the main reason why i chose this over a comparable Synology is because this is capable of transcoding, I only wish I could completely turn transcoding off now but it seems to be impossible to completely disable.

When streaming to an AppleTV, you need to use an app (QAirplay) that you open in a browser of a computer or phone connected to the same network, then you browse for the media content you want to stream to your AppleTV and send it, so if you plan on using an AppleTV you should be prepared to not be able to browse directly from your TV like you can with other DLNA devices.

The phone apps are cool but it takes a long time to connect through myqnapcloud and if you get a call or use another window or app on iPhone and then return to the Qnap app you have to wait to re-connect, it should keep the connection active for at least 5 minutes

The QMusic App for iOS does not allow you to configure it so you can connect while you are away from home, you actually have to be on the same wifi subnet.

The NAS does not always show up in windows explorer, or the mapped network drive. While transferring large files, i had to run a 50 ft cat6 cable from my computer to the NAS because the connection would time out. I tried ssh and ftp to transfer the large files as instructed but only a direct connection and using file station would work.

Got this to replace a Windows Server 2008 R2 box I made a while ago.

The Windows Server had 8 hard drives, but I frequently found myself using just 2 of them. I wanted to save on power consumption so I decided to replace it with this NAS. I have it set up using two 1TB WD Green drives in single disk mode after using wdidle3.

Here are my impressions so far:

The NAS will format the hard drives you put in it automatically. Be aware of this.

The Windows Server transfers at about 60-80 Mbps.
The Qnap TS-212P transfers at about 15-40 Mbps. Yes, sometimes it's slow to transfer files.

Plex Server works to stream to the Roku boxes, as long as it doesn't need to transcode. I converted all my video files to x264 in mp4/m4v formats with AAC stereo and AC3 surround sound using Handbrake. Plex on Roku works great after I re-encoded the video files.
However, I neglected to tick the "Web Optimized" option in Handbrake for some of the video files. Those files won't play on Plex Web because Plex needs to transcode.

Updates the DNS to a No-IP account without any problems.

OpenVPN works great in conjunction with Squid. This allows me to use an insecure Wi-Fi (such as in a coffee shop) and create a VPN tunnel to the NAS at home. Then I can surf the web in relative security. I use this when I want to purchase something online at a coffee shop. OpenVPN also works with iPhone 5s, so that's a bonus.

I don't use it with anything else, so I can't comment on other apps. I turned off all of the apps I don't use, such as Download Station, Music Station, Photo Station, and Multimedia Station.

The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is transfer speed. It's unpredictable. 15-40 Mbps is a huge gap.
