Best Dehydrator on the Market,
By
This review is from: TSM Products Stainless Steel Food Dehydrator with 10 Stainless Steel Shelves (Kitchen)
In my opinion, this is the best dehydrator on the market. I have one of the largest raw food websites on the internet, and two published books on raw food recipes. I am constantly using my D10 dehydrator as I have found that nothing on the market even comes close to how well this dehydrator works. And to top it off, it is made from stainless steel, not plastic, and it is quiet! I have never had a failure with this dehydrator and find it easy to dial in the temps to dehydrate with. The addition of the mesh screens and the non-stick sheets make it perfect for everything that I dehydrate.
I have friends who have companies that produce products and the TSM is the only dehydrator they will use. It is the one that I always recommend.

Run away,

Run fast. I ordered this product on August 24...It finally arrived in September. It looked beautiful. Set it all up and it just doesn't work worth a darn. Called the company. 10 days later they responded. They told me to cut tomatoes with a mandolin, to use an external thermometer to monitor the temperature outside. Look very carefully at the controls and you will see the marks between 90 and 165 are not numbered. How can you set it for a temperature if you don't know where it is? The manufacturer insists that the veges need to be continually monitored with an external thermometer. I got two kinds of tomatoes out of this machine. The ones cut with the mandolin were impossible to remove from the trays. The ones sliced by hand were gummy. After 3 days of trying to get the tomatoes right, I gave up and tried to send it back. I waited 2 weeks for an RMA. Here it is Oct 22 and I'm still waiting for a credit. Yes I shipped the thing back. After 20 years of dehydrating with a cheap crummy machine, that worked beautifully, I am very, very, very disappointed with this modern machine. Heck with my old machine, I would throw in hand cut tomatoes at night, set it at 125 degrees and wake up in the morning and load it again. Last year I dried 400 lbs of tomatoes. This year zip. So run away...far away from this product.

We decided to get the 10 tray dehydrator because we're drying large lots of fruits and vegetables -- enough for 2-3 weeks at a time. This dehydrator worked better than expected right out of the box. Our first batch of dried fruit was wonderful. Much better than store bought. Be sure to get a thermometer to track the temperature if you don't already have one. The stainless steel is great: We clean the shelves easily in the dishwasher, and I don't have to worry about plastic leaching chemicals on our food. Well worth the cost.

As a small sideline of my smoked salmon business, I've been making smoked salmon jerky & Indian candy for many years, now, using a locally built dehydrator. I wanted to shift to an all stainless steel version, and, after lots of research and indecision, settled on the 10 tray TSM dehydrator. It's a gem. It's shortened the time to jerky stage by several hours and requires much less tray turning than my previous dehydrator and - a real bonus - is a snap to clean up. It's also fairly quiet - certainly much quieter than my previous dehydrator.

Amazon advertises this item as being with stainless steel shelves. Instead, I received model #32608 (it's clearly written on the back of the unit), which is the chrome shelves model (which is actually cheaper). Good thing I checked before starting to use it. The reason why I chose this dehydrator was because of the stainless steel shelves. This looks like fraud to me. They are not sending you what they are advertising!!!

Excellent Dehydrator,

I've had this dehydrator for several years now and it is an awesome product. If you have a half a clue about what your doing, this dehydrator will do everything you want it to do. The temperature dial is just a variable knob; it is not exact, it is an approximation. If an exact temperature is critical to your dehydrating, then probably you'll want to monitor it with something precise. I use mine for making beef and venison jerky, drying peppers prior to grinding them, and drying fruit. I've dried hundreds of pounds of meat, and many bushels of peppers and fruit. This item has worked flawlessly. The real question is, would I buy it again? Absolutely!

I'm guessing that many people spending the extra money to get a dehydrator with stainless steel shelves are doing it for health reasons--i.e., not wanting your food in contact with hot plastic.
Well, incredibly, the manufacturers of this over-priced item have not spent the very few extra dollars necessary to isolate the wiring and other electronics from the heated air space--it is just attached to the inside of the back wall! I ran this thing outside for 36 hours, and there was still so much smell from the heated vinyl coverings on the wiring that I could not run it inside without making the kitchen smell like toxic waste. |
