"An excellent book."--Harpers

By Mary J. Gramlich TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
When I read a How-To book, I want to really know the details on How-To do whatever my goal objective is. This book gives you that core information and takes it up another notch with the where to go to get the basic tools to start your own home tutoring business.

I encourage everyone to read this book to gain an insight on what it takes to become a home tutor but also to tap into the ESL area, which is booming right now with no end in sight to its expansion.

I am a veteran high school English teacher, and I picked up this book in order to learn about how to establish and advertise my own tutoring business in order to make some extra money during the summer. I had high hopes because of the five-star rating, but I was quite disappointed.

The author claims to have taught ESL for 25 years, yet her book is riddled with grammatical errors. She appears to have no concept of pronoun-antecedent agreement. Ironically, she now runs an editing business. It goes without saying that I have serious doubts about her grasp of the tutoring industry.

The first section of the book describes how to set up a tutoring business, but it mostly just states the obvious, like getting business cards. For those of us who are not experienced in salesmanship, it doesn't go into much detail about how to promote one's services. The second section is about how to tutor ESL and includes hypothetical scenarios based upon stereotypes that are uncomfortable to read. In both sections, the author has a habit of asking the reader questions without answering them, and all the photos are poor quality, black and white, and resemble clip art.

I would never recommend this book. Anyone who is smart enough to be a tutor already knows everything that it can provide. It's just common sense.

When I read a How-To book, I want to really know the details on How-To do whatever my goal objective is. This book gives you that core information and takes it up another notch with the where to go to get the basic tools to start your own home tutoring business.

The author makes you access yourself, know your market, think about your choices, understand the dynamics of the situation, and empower yourself to develop a course of action. There is so much information placed inside these pages that if you do not get your answer here it is not a question that can be answered.

I encourage everyone to read this book to gain an insight on what it takes to become a home tutor but also to tap into the ESL area, which is booming right now with no end in sight to its expansion.

Kimberly knows of what she speaks, as this was her home based business and all the wonderful insights she has, she is sharing. When you are good at what you do, you have no fear of teaching others!

Whether a first time tutor or an experienced one, you'll find ideas about marketing your business, how to tutor on line,as well as some hands on lesson plans. The emphasis in the second half of the book focuses on tutoring international people whose first language is not English (ESL)with very detailed lesson plans. Kimberly Fujioka has covered the business from start up to resources for everything from business cards to webcam requirements for virtual classrooms. As a reading and writing tutor in my home for the past 15 years, I still found valuable content in this well written and well thought out book.

This book gives great advice on tutoring. It is a recent book and worth the money. The other books on this topic are too vauge and focus more on teaching a private class rather than "one on one" and small group tutoring.

I must say this book is a great example of how a self published book can be better reference than the standard main stream published books on "How to make money..blah blah"...Thumbs up!
