5.0 out of 5 stars The best thing since closed captioning
I'm hearing impaired, and very often television shows (especially older ones) don't have closed captioning. This is also maddeningly true with some of the newer movies, even from big studios. There's a law regarding closed captioning, but sometimes producers simply don't follow it. It's frustrating.

1.0 out of 5 stars TV Ears Headset
I have used a TV Ears original system for several years and have been extremely satisfied with it. The replacement headset performance was far below that of the original. Range was much smaller, sound quality poorer, and movement or line of sight interference produced considerable static. I was very unhappy with the purchase, and returned it for a refund.

I'm hearing impaired, and very often television shows (especially older ones) don't have closed captioning. This is also maddeningly true with some of the newer movies, even from big studios. There's a law regarding closed captioning, but sometimes producers simply don't follow it. It's frustrating.

I have tried several headsets over the years with varying degrees of success. Bringing the sound directly to your ear vastly improves your ability to understand what is being said (it actually helps to use a headset instead of a hearing aid when trying to improve comprehension - I don't understand the physiology of it, but it works). What's unfortunate is that most headsets aren't designed for the hearing impaired. They're designed for people who want to listen to music as they roam around the house. This means that the headsets aren't optimized for voice enhancement, and instead deliver quite a bit of bass. Bass tones don't improve comprehension, they lessen it.

That's where TV Ears comes in. Yes, the name is a bit silly, but these things really do work. The first time I used them I had the silliest smile on my face, because for the very first time I was understanding what was being said *perfectly*. The sound quality was magnificent, and the voice enhancement that the product brags about is spot-on.

There's an added bonus.

TV Ears says that most theaters use the same technology that they do. I wasn't sure I believed that, so continued to use the (most often) old and sometimes dysfunctional headsets that theaters provide. Fed up with watching theater employees throw headsets into bins, and at least a 50/50 shot that when the movie started I was going to have to go back and exchange the headset, I tried the TV Ears. They worked. Instead of simply "booming" the sound, it was just like at home. They enhanced what was being said. I go to movies all the time, so now I "never leave home without" them. They're better than American Express. <wink>

This item can improve a relationship between two people watching TV with different hearing capabilities! Easy to install and use...in fact I was able to mute the TV and only have audio through the device...good for late viewing regardless of hearing capability.

They are somewhat fragile, so the headphones themselves need to be regularly replaced. Also, there appears to be three or four different types that may only be paired with the correct base or they don't work. That would be fine if each type were clearly labeled, but they are not. I now have two headphones that do not match the base I purchased. I do wish they would clearly label each base and set of extra headphones with a name or color, so this would not happen.

TV Ears are an excellent product for those with hearing problems. The sound is very clear and can be used for both TV and DVD"s.
The only problem I have with this product, is that the the plastic strips attached between the ear phones and receiver is not a very durable plastic and tends to break after only a year of use.

This is a replacement for an original headset, purchased many years ago with the transmitter. This system has been a godsend in my house, letting my hard-of-hearing mother listen to TV without driving the rest of us mad with the noise. Mom loves the system because she can actually understand the dialog better than she could with the TV up loud.

I have owned 5 sets of TV Ears. My original pair was perfect, but one of the stems broke off and that was when I started the replacement procedures...I always come back!! This last purchase was quick and easy from this merchant - 5 stars for them. But, the sound it emits isn't as good as the original...everything sounds too bassy, even after I use the tonal adjustment. I kept them anyway!

These things are great. My husband watches a different TV in an adjacent room, and his taste in TV programs is quite different from mine. Before TV ears, it would be a struggle for either of us to hear our own TV's when both were on. Now he uses the TV ears and we both can enjoy hearing our own programs. This is the third one we've owned, and they don't last forever, but they do work about 15-18 months before they fail. They charge fairly quickly and it's simple to hook them up to your TV. He wears them so they hang down below his chin, says that's more comfortable.
