Review

"The first movement is almost a tone poem unto itself, tragic, sensitively engaged with exploring the more reticent and retiring aspects of the flutes." -- Audaud.com

Format: Audio CD
What a great CD! it starts off with the concerto
for two flutes which is an unusually outstanding work.
I say "unusually" because is in two movements, and
it starts with a Largo and in the last movement it
calls for maracas, tambourine, and tamburo bulgaro
(a Bulgarian folk drum). the opening largo is nostalgic
and meditative, and the following is an allegro giocoso
which starts with a comic melody that as it goes on
it is followed by maracas, then by tambourine, then the
melody is taken by the whole orchestra. The movement
ends as it started.
The piano concerto is in the traditional three movements it was written in 2003 to celebrate the anniversary of the Turkish Army. The concerto opens with trumpet fanfare, followed by a very militant melody, it brings to mind some of the works by Shostakovich. The second movement opens with very pianissimo rolls on suspended cymbals, the third and the final movement is very percussive and loud. Great works, all performed under the direction of the composer, with flautists Patrick Gallois, and Phillip Bernold, and pianist Jean-Philippe Collard. Indeed a five stars CD.
