5.0 out of 5 stars Best album in collection, July 23, 2008
By
This review is from: Tabby Road (Audio CD)
We received this in the mail two days ago, and it hasn't left our player since. I'm back to buy another one for the car. "Kitty Sister" could have been written about my two who love to dress up at cats and play family. Whenever "Boogie Monster" comes on, everyone stops what they're doing to converge around the player and dance up a storm. My definite favorite is "S-L-Double E-P-OVER." And I think that "Dr. Wiggle" about losing a tooth is the one that is getting lots of air time on XMKids right now. Take a moment to preview this album---it'll be THE kids' rock album of 2008, I guarantee!

Tabby Road is the fourth Recess Monkey CD we've purchased, and the only other that rivals it in terms of the instant appeal on first listen is the first album we purchased, Field Trip. (. It took a couple of days to warm up to Final Funktier, and a bit longer with Aminal House) But Tabby Road has the perfect amount of polish, whimsy and fun -- not to mention the sheer musical talent, which is why we began our Recess Monkey collection from the start.

My favorites are 'Pedal Power' -- a very sweet song about learning to ride a bike, 'The Sandbox Song' which packs this childhood nostalgia-type punch, and the very silly song -- yet oddly 'hip' song, 'Mummy Don't Allow' which has a sort of Grateful Dead musical feel while making creative fun of the dual meanings of the word 'mummy.'

My two girls are super-fond of 'Kitty Sister' and of course, the fast-paced SL-Double E-P-Over.

But don't make the mistake of assuming that the preschool subject matter waters this music down -- it doesn't. This isn't just 'kid's music'. The style which walks a line between 1960's Beatles-esque and a more modern sort of indie rock will have appeal to anyone who appreciates the genre, and the lyrics capture childhood in a way that isn't trite. One of the more interesting aspects of the album that we didn't notice until we'd been listening to it for a couple months is the way that the song 'Monster Truck' which had previously been one of the less-appreciated songs on the album, combines riffs from a number of other songs -- as well as seeming to poke fun at the larger Hummer-type vehicles taking over the parking lots these days.

If you're looking for music for your kids that you'd actually listen to when they're *not* in the car, look no further. I love these guys, but more importantly -- my kids love them, and that's probably the understatement of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, February 2, 2009

Love this CS- much needed break from other annoying kids CDs. My two year olds love it as well and we listen often in the car. Also great background music for times when we have other families with kids over for dinner or visits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Showcases a pop-rock style music that is pure entertainment, August 15, 2008
This review is from: Tabby Road (Audio CD)
Recess Monkey is a successful and independent recording group that has been entertaining children in both live concert performances and through the release of their popular CD albums. "Tabby Road" is the newest of these and another certain hit for preschool kids through early elementary school students. The first eight compositions comprising this flawlessly produced and superbly performed CD include Birthday Bite; Pedal Power; S-L-Double E-P-Over; The Sandbox Song; Kitty Sister, Dr. Wiggle; KC in the Clouds; and Under My Bed. The last nine compositions are a medley of lively toe-tapping tunes that include Green Monster; My yeti's So Cool; Robin (the Sugar Goblin); Messy Nessie; Boogie Monster; Mummy; Little Dragon; Monster Truck; and Wolfman. Altogether, "Tabby Road" showcases a pop-rock style music that is pure entertainment and confidently recommended for family, daycare center, preschool, community library, and elementary school library CD music collections for young children.
