About the Author

Marcia (rhymes with Garcia) Gagliardi is a freelance food writer and culinary personality, known as the tablehopper. Marcia and her free weekly e-column are among the Bay Area’s most trusted resources for thoughtful recommendations on where to eat, drink, and hobnob. She has appeared on Oprah & Friends: The Gayle King Show, Playboy TV, the Martha Stewart Living Today radio show, and many local programs. She has been zipping around the Bay in her red Alfa Romeo since 1994, and has been writing about food since 2002.

More About the Author

A freelance food writer since 2004, and a resident of San Francisco since 1994, Marcia Gagliardi is perhaps best known in the food community as "the tablehopper." Her cheeky weekly e-column, archived on tablehopper.com, is chock-full of insider news and gossip about the San Francisco restaurant and bar scene, covering what's hot, opening or closing, along with restaurant reviews, culinary events, and even star sightings in bars and restaurants.

Since Marcia was a teenager, she has been an unofficial culinary concierge for her friends and family, who came to rely on her knack for providing the perfect restaurant recommendation. After launching her weekly tablehopper e-column in 2006 and receiving an onslaught of requests from her readers, Marcia started "tip please," a free customized restaurant recommendation service on her site.

1,500 restaurant recommendations later, Marcia realized that her readers were always looking for restaurants by situation, and rarely by neighborhood or cuisine. Whether it's a group of out-of-towners trying to find that quintessential San Francisco experience, a birthday group seeking a rowdy place for a party of 10, or a nervous couple on a blind date, people want a personal recommendation from a well-connected local--not a faceless guidebook. Her solution to these dining dilemmas is her first book: The Tablehopper's Guide to Dining and Drinking in San Francisco: Find the Right Spot for Every Occasion from Ten Speed Press.

The four-year-old tablehopper column was voted "Most Obsessive Restaurant Informant" by 7x7 magazine, San Francisco magazine's Best of the Bay Area 2008 and 2009: Reader's Choice for "Best Bay Area Scoop," and "Best Fresh Scuttlebutt" by the San Francisco Bay Guardian.

Marcia has appeared on Oprah & Friends: The Gayle King Show; Playboy TV; the Martha Stewart Living Today radio show, and many local programs. She also writes for San Francisco magazine, the Foodie 411 column for the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau, Edible San Francisco, and Northside.

Visit www.tablehopper.com for more, and to sign up for her free weekly e-column. You can follow her on Twitter at www.twitter.com/tablehopper.

I have purchased 23 books for touring San Francisco. I live about 45 minutes away and I love to go there as much as I can. Marcia's book is the BEST book for me! It is all about the drinking and eating, not about sites and tourist traps. I would recommend that a tourist forgo the sites and dive straight into the heart of the city: it's unique dining establishments both swanky and funky/eclectic and the taverns, pubs and posh hotel bars. That is what SF is all about. I am giving this book as Christmas gifts to everyone I love -- if I can wait that long. Probably not.

If you live in San Francisco the Tablehopper newsletter is your weekly fix for all that's happening in the local restaurant scene. Now the Tablehopper herself, Marcia Gagliardi, has written an occasion based guide book that will help you find the best place to drink or dine. Going out with the parents? Planning a birthday party? Dining with a picky eater? Gagliardi has got you covered. I've only had this book for a few weeks and it's come in very handy already. It's not comprehensive, but it lists hand picked favorites from someone I trust.

This is not your normal city dining guide. Marcia knows what there is to know about food, drink and related fun in San Francisco world of restaurants. The Tablehopper's Guide will guide you to not only the food and drink you are looking for but also the place to go for the experience you want. Marcia is a character, smart, irreverent, edgy, this book is a fun read with a lot of personality and enough detail to plan the perfect night out in the city by the bay. If you are a business traveler to San Francisco, Marcia's recommendations can make sure you will enjoy one of the greatest aspects of a trip to San Francisco - incredible options for eating and drinking.

If I lived in San Francisco and knew my way in and around the city this would be an excellent guide but since I'm not it's a challenge to navigate the book and the neighborhoods that Tablehopper recommends.
