I've been using the Tabletalk Magazine for years; it is a good devotional for those in Reformed circles and serious about Scripture. I'm a big one for writing in my magazine and keeping the back issues for reference. So I was wondering how suitable the electronic version would be for my purposes. I'm also an ebook conversion tech at a medium size publishing company, so I know a thing or two about electronic format, fixed layout (such as Tabletalk magazine), etc.

Positive: It is nice to have Tabletalk with me when in the car, waiting at the doctor office, etc. One can always pull it up, read the various articles, or review the day's devo. Nice and convenient. And the electronic Kindle version comes free if you already have a subscription to the printed version.

It is also nice that you have access to back issues. These already display when accessed through the library menu and they can be downloaded when connected to the Internet. Nice. Also, when you are done with an issue, you can "archive" it for future reading. Nice.

Negative: Here are some things that I think the technicians need to think about. I realize there are limitations to fixed layout, whether on a Kindle or using iBooksAuthor, etc. One is the readability. The text size is too small and, of course, one weakness of fixed layout is that the type size cannot be adjusted on a reading device, such as on your Kindle. You better have good eyes to be able to read the material. The technicians should rethink the design of digital Tabletalk. Increase the font size to a more readable size when displaying on the Kindle. It can help to not try to perfectly match the look of the print version. Rethink the breakouts and the otherwise blank left margins in the articles.

5.0 out of 5 stars APP Got Help February 11, 2013

Purchased Kindle Fire HD 8.9 a few months ago, loaded this app, had a few issues, too small as it didn't fill the whole screen, couldn't navigate. Recently updated June issue and now have a full screen for these weak eyes! Great magazine because of the excellent content. I have 12 issues downloaded now, only June 2013 fills the whole screen. Ligonier is really laboring to keep up with the new technology-just gotta be patient.

- Review for the Kindle HD -
This app is great. Just like the print edition, it's gorgeous and the navigation is very intuitive. The only setbacks are the lack of text size adjustments and some of the articles are oddly cropped. Really close to being a 5 star app.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reading that educates and inspires. June 7, 2013

I love the reading level I feel like I am really growing when I read the articles and follow the devotionals! The authors are well educated and they bring an academic view point to their writing that I find appealing.

App works wonderfully for my Fire HD 8.9; it does crash upon startup more than I wish it would, but that is only a small bother. All pages of the hardcopy version are nicely displayed in full graphical format. It's well indexed and easy to navigate. Where articles are published online, the app provides links for those articles. Occasionally I lose visibility to all the back issues in my library, but by logging out and logging back in, I regain visibility. I haven't kept track of precise times, but it seems to happen around the time Ligonier pushes out a new monthly issue.

For my original model Fire, I found the print format too small, and not adjustable. However, subscribers can arrange for ebook delivery of monthly issues in mobi format, and you can read them apart from the TT app just like any other Kindle book. Graphics and the native TT print font are absent in this format, but it still works great on smaller Fire models as well as the e-ink versions of the Kindle, and other portable devices via the Amazon Kindle app. Essentially you can take Tabletalk with you wherever you go, so the eBook edition is a nice supplement or alternative to the full Tabletalk Magazine app on smaller devices.

Tabletalk magazine is great if you are a reformed Christian. I especially like that they provide the digital version with a subscription to the mailed edition. RC Sproul is a hot author for me right now and I always look forward to hearing what he says.
