The Taboo Against Being Your Own Best Friend,
By B. Fontaine (Vancouver, B.C.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Taboo Against Being Your Own Best Friend (Hardcover)
This was a very odd book. I found it in my local library catalogue under the subject of assertiveness, however it was not at all what I expected. It was basically a 400-page rant about the "endemic"-a frequently used word by Dr James R. Fisher, Jr.-problems of modern society. A good portion of the book was written in italics as if the author was yelling at the reader. According to inside jacket of the book, Fisher is an organizational and industrial psychologist, however his skills were not apparent in the structure of this book. The subject matter of one chapter was hardly discernibly different from any other one. Hyperbole, senseless metaphors and oblique references made this book laughable at times. How it got published is a wonder. At times as I read this book, I wondered if Fisher hadn't had a nervous breakdown. Why did I continue to read it? Well, I don't like not finishing something I've started and, admittedly, there were passage where the author was actually lucid. |
