Product Description

Editorial Review

It sounds so simple: get your team to name common words without voicing a few choice descriptors. But could you describe a wristwatch without mentioning time, wrist, or clock? Taboo rewards those who think--and speak--fast. The team that correctly identifies as many words as possible in a minute (measured with an hourglass timer) wins. If a member of the opposing team, armed with the blaring buzzer, catches the clue giver using any of the taboo words, a point is deducted from the group's score. It's a good idea to separate people who know each other well, because their familiarity can be too great an advantage. If the clue is spinach, prompting with "Mom made this every Monday" just doesn't seem fair, though it is permissible according to the rules. Playing Taboo requires an AA battery and a sense of humor--you'll need them both! The timer is included. Taboo is for four or more players. --Leah Ball

5.0 out of 5 stars Buzz off!, November 9, 2000

= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars

This game is definitely a lot of fun, and for quick thinkers. The plusses are well explained in other reviews. A few other things to consider, however:

1) Don't buy batteries (not included w/ the game). Really, there isn't much use for the buzzer, & it can be extremely annoying. There's enough excitement with the gameplay itself. The opposing team can just yell out "buzz," if they so desire.

2) Relatedly, the only things that you really need are the cards. The rest is just fluff. If you are familiar with the concept & rules, save yourself some $ and buy a booster pack. The booster is simply another stack of the cards with new words.

3) As in a lot of newer games, there are the inevitable current event (or not so current) related topics. If you don't know who Kenneth Starr or John Glenn are, you will be stymied on a few.

4) The better you know your partner(s), the better you will do. A lot of points come from saying stuff like: "Remember when we..." Try mixing up the teams for a fairer game.

Don't let these stop you from trying out this game, however. It's a ton of fun & has long-lasting appeal.

5.0 out of 5 stars second most favorite game of all time, December 3, 1999

This game is second only to Pictionary as the best party game ever (Cranium is third). Of course, it could be because I rarely get to play Pictionary because my friends keep wanting to play Taboo. If you are only going to buy one game - BUY THIS ONE! Note to the game makers: make refill cards -- soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great--need refills!, December 6, 1999

This game is so much fun that I never get tired of it (and I am not usually a big game player). The game is fun and interesting for people who think quickly and are eloquent, but there isn't the kind of peer pressure to perform and show off your knowledge that you get with Trivial Pursuit. It's loads of fun. To the manufacturers: PLEASE MAKE REFILL CARDS. WE'VE USED OUR CARDS OVER AND OVER. I AM SURPRISED YOU HAVE NOT COME OUT WITH THESE YET!
