5.0 out of 5 stars Buzz off!
This game is definitely a lot of fun, and for quick thinkers. The plusses are well explained in other reviews. A few other things to consider, however:

1) Don't buy batteries (not included w/ the game). Really, there isn't much use for the buzzer, & it can be extremely annoying. There's enough excitement with the gameplay itself. The opposing team can just yell...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun only so many times
This game is GREAT fun the first 4 or 5 times you play, however, after that, it is boring and looses it's appeal. You become able to guess the word on the card before the person even gives you a full description because you remember the words from previous games played. Unlike Monopoply or Scrabble that have a different outcome each time you play, Taboo becomes very...

The opposing team can just yell out "buzz," if they so desire.

2) Relatedly, the only things that you really need are the cards. The rest is just fluff. If you are familiar with the concept & rules, save yourself some $ and buy a booster pack. The booster is simply another stack of the cards with new words.

3) As in a lot of newer games, there are the inevitable current event (or not so current) related topics. If you don't know who Kenneth Starr or John Glenn are, you will be stymied on a few.

4) The better you know your partner(s), the better you will do. A lot of points come from saying stuff like: "Remember when we..." Try mixing up the teams for a fairer game.

Don't let these stop you from trying out this game, however. It's a ton of fun & has long-lasting appeal.

This game is second only to Pictionary as the best party game ever (Cranium is third). Of course, it could be because I rarely get to play Pictionary because my friends keep wanting to play Taboo. If you are only going to buy one game - BUY THIS ONE! Note to the game makers: make refill cards -- soon.

This game is so much fun that I never get tired of it (and I am not usually a big game player). The game is fun and interesting for people who think quickly and are eloquent, but there isn't the kind of peer pressure to perform and show off your knowledge that you get with Trivial Pursuit. It's loads of fun. To the manufacturers: PLEASE MAKE REFILL CARDS. WE'VE USED OUR CARDS OVER AND OVER. I AM SURPRISED YOU HAVE NOT COME OUT WITH THESE YET!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can you say "FUN"?, January 23, 2000

My husband and I go up north to "the cabin" about 4 times a year with friends, and this game is the one thing we never fail to pack! We usually play girls against guys (they never learn), and it's amazing how GOOD some people can be at this! A good vocabulary helps, but so does quick thinking and a clear head, so the "wordiest" team doesn't always win! Loads of laughter (and Homer Simpson "DOY! " impressions) are guaranteed when you say one of the "Taboo" words....and you will! This game is great.....you gotta get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Taboo is unbelievably fun!, December 27, 1999

The other night, I was invited to an old friend's house. I brought two of my friends, and two of her friends were there. We were sitting around, making polite conversation, but there wasn't alot for us to talk about- her and her friends and me and my friends lead totally different lifestyles. Then, my friend suggested that we play Taboo. It turned out to be one of the most fun evenings I've ever had. We all got into the game, and by the end, we were falling all over each other laughing. The six of us left much better friends with each other than when we arrived-taboo was a great way for us to find out that we all have more in common than we thought! Really, I saw first-hand that anyone, no matter what their interests and talents, can have a blast with Taboo. Also, it's not like Trivial Pursuit or Scrabble where people are always trying to prove their intelligence - it's a rare game where everyone's equally challenged-you can have fun and win without making anyone feel stupid. And it's really fast-paced, exciting and just plain fun - something you can't say about checkers or monopoly.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting game to play among friends, November 18, 2001

Taboo has had the honor of being one of the first few 'board' games added to my collection. A fast-paced guessing game, Taboo can generate some hilarious descriptions of concepts by friends. It is bound to bring out the competitiveness in everyone as teams go head-to-head trying to describe words on cards without mentioning the 'Taboo' words.

The only flaw to this game would have to be the lack of cards in the decks. Die-hard players like myself and friends can quickly memorize the small deck that is provided with the game and no expansions are available that I have seen. The game stimulates the thought processes and is fun at the same time and for that it gets my five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can't Tell You How Much Fun This Game Is, December 6, 2003

Looking for a great game to play at a party with a group of any size? This is it.

The object is to get your team to guess the word at the top of the card. You can use words, phrases, sentences, etc. You can not use the others words on the card - they're taboo! You also can't use hand motions. (This is the one my family and I struggle with the most.) You have one minute to get your team to guess as many words as possible. Ready? Go!

It never fails to amaze me when I flip over a new card and look at it. All I can ever think of are the taboo words. But by talking around them, I can usually get my team to guess it. Obviously, the closer nit the group, the better because you can give clues that are unique to them based on favorite movies or recent events or running jokes. My brother and I used to clean up at this game if we were on the same team for this reason. Still, a group of complete strangers can play because the words are general enough that anyone can get them. I've played with young kids, too. Just give them a little extra leeway on words they don't know and they'll be fine.

The game comes with a buzzer the other team can use if you mess up, and that's half the fun. It also doubles as a good bad joke buzzer.

I'm always up for a game of Taboo. It's different every time you play it because the same people never get the same words twice. Get it today and start enjoying.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much fun, and competitive, you can't stop playing!, January 21, 2000

I played this game on New Year's Eve at a party at my brother's house. As the evening went on and the guest got fewer, we decided to play this game. We played women against the men and of course the women dominated, and the men refused to quit until they were ahead (which never happened). We played for about 3 1/2 hours straight. People who have extensive or limited vocabulary can stand to learn a lot from this game and have fun at the same time. If you've ever played Gestures and get very fustrated because you can't say anything, but you know you could explain it, Taboo is your game. It's the exact opposite. You can't use any gestures or props, but you can sing, make reference to past experiences, etc. I highly recommend it for any parties. I know that it is a requirement at all of my family gatherings.

I was totally hooked after the first time I played this game. It really makes you think on your feet as you try to get your teammates to guess the highlighted word on your card without saying the other printed "taboo" words. After a few turns, I caught on to the idea of describing the actual word or putting it in a reference that my teammates would understand. It was hysterical hooking up with close friends or family who could figure out what I was trying to get at with odd clues that no one else quite understood. I told my Mother about this game and she was excited to learn and we bought it for a party. Some of the guests were apprehensive about playing at first, but after watching the rest of us, they all wanted to join in. This is a great game to play with 4 or more people with guaranteed laughs. As far as the buzzer goes... it is a bit annoying, but the guys especially enjoyed using it when time ran out or a taboo word was said. I think it added to the laughs and the fun of the game. After playing a few times, you become accustomed to the particular word set, so I recommend the booster sets as well as the newer edition of the game. PLEASE BUY THIS. I GUARANTEE YOU WILL HAVE FUN!
