From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7–Cassie reminisces that, On our Peewee team, I was the only starter who could also someday qualify for Miss America. The daughter of a former high school football star and the pseudo-niece of her middle school's football coach, Cassie and gal pal Molly become the only two girls on the seventh-grade football team. She had given up football when her parents got divorced and began running track instead. However, after Coach Harris, or Uncle Beef (who has an especially endearing relationship to the protagonist), convinces her to try out for the team, she is back on the gridiron. This story is driven by both the game and Cassie's family's dynamics. Levy provides some depth to this story as both the protagonist and her father develop: she finds a place within his new family and he realizes how to support and nurture his relationship with his daughter. Pair this sports novel with Maria Testa's Some Kind of Pride (Delacorte, 2001).–Jennifer Cogan, formerly at Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore, MD

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. From the time she starred in the Peewee League, Cassie has known that she inherited her dad's football abilities. Now she's 13, her dad has moved out, her mom has remarried, and track has replaced football. But when the football coach opens team tryouts to girls, Cassie and her friend Molly make the cut, becoming the first girls to play on a boys' team. Unfortunately, Dad won't sign the consent form, even though Mom does. How can they change his mind? In the meantime, Cassie experiences plenty of hard knocks, both physical and emotional, on the field and off. Divorced parents, a stepsibling, humor, and dialogue that sounds authentic contribute plenty of yardage in this realistic story that is sure to score big with girls. Julie Cummins

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!, July 11, 2011
This review is from: Tackling Dad (Hardcover)
This is a cute book about a seventh grade girl who wants to try out for the football team. She grew up playing pee-wee and was the best on the team. Now, the middle school coach wants her on his team.

Just a fun tale about girls being looked upon as equals on the football field; but, more importantly, winning the approval of her dad.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anybody who likes to read funny books, August 28, 2005
This review is from: Tackling Dad (Library Binding)
Cassie was the star of the pee-wee football team a few years ago. Many things have changed since then, such as her parents getting divorced. Now she only visits her dad on weekends. When she and her best friend Molly make the new football team, will Cassie ever get her parents to sign the form to allow her to play in the games? If they do let Cassie play, will she ever get the respect she wants from the boys on the team? How much longer will Cassie be able to stand Serena, her new step-mom (Mrs. Tofu Queen), who gets worked up over almost everything? You can find out in this terrific book called "Tackling Dad".

This book was a page-turner and and I enjoyed spending the time to read it! At first I didn't know how this book would be since it was about football and I don't like football, but this book turned out to be excellent. The things the characters said in "Tackling Dad" were very funny. I recommend "Tackling Dad" to pretty much anybody who likes to read funny books, but especially if you like football.
